Overview

This unit explores the social and cultural dimensions of design by introducing key theories and encouraging you to analyse design artefacts through these lenses. You will connect these concepts to your own design practice, fostering critical thinking, self-reflection, and a responsible approach to design that considers its impact on individuals and communities.

Learning outcomes

  1. Define and differentiate between key concepts in material culture studies, such as theories of objects, spaces, experiences and images;
  2. Critically contextualise the systems of production, consumption and exchange that impact upon design;
  3. Analyse works of design from a particular theoretical perspective, using the correct terminology and appropriate analytic emphasis;
  4. Present critical arguments in an informed and articulate manner, whether spoken or written;
  5. Evaluate the environmental and social impact of design choices and demonstrate a commitment to sustainable and ethical design practices;
  6. Reflect on personal design processes and identify areas for improvement in critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Workload

12 hours per week including 2 contact hours and 1 hour online lecture plus 9 hours of independent study. In Summer Semester A, the workload includes 9 contact hours per week for 4 weeks.
