Overview

This unit will introduce you to essential concepts and creative approaches that you can apply to develop solutions for more sustainable and equitable cities. In Australia and globally, there is an urgent need to understand and develop new approaches to the social, environmental, and economic challenges besetting cities from sprawling development that contributes to a warming planet to planning equitable access to community services. This unit challenges you to critically engage with urban environments and analyse urban challenges while developing the skills to effectively communicate your ideas.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate understanding of relevant concepts and approaches in urban studies, planning and design;
  2. Apply critical thinking skills to analyse complex urban issues;
  3. Integrate knowledge and synthesise insights from diverse sources to develop sustainable and equitable planning and design approaches;
  4. Effectively communicate urban studies concepts using written, visual, and verbal communication skills;
  5. Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on the ethical approaches to planning, recognising the importance of inclusivity and sustainability;
  6. Demonstrate the ability to seek new knowledge and engage in continuous self-directed learning.
