This project unit explores the implications of expanding urbanisation on the edge of cities and towns including ecologies, built form and infrastructure. Through projects that involve the interplay between constructed and natural systems that shape our cities, you will build research methods, technical capacity, analytical approaches, creative responses and modes of articulation.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the principles, concepts and regulations that underpin integrated planning and design for expanding cities and towns, towards social, economic and environmental sustainability;
- Apply research skills and creativity to address complex planning and design issues, evaluate existing regulatory and governance structures, and propose innovative ideas through biodiversity and water sensitive urban design, sustainable and quality built form, and liveability and access;
- Integrate and synthesise data effectively, strategically responding to multifaceted problems through planning and design responses, to regulation, environmental assessment, hazard mitigation, evaluation and governance arrangements that support climate resilience and sustainability principles;
- Cultivate advanced interpersonal and communication skills, encompassing written, spatial, design, visual, graphic and verbal modes of expression;
- Apply ethical approaches to planning in addressing climate resilience and sustainability awareness towards proposed equitable decisions and implementation;
- Adapt to evolving environmental and climate challenges, seek new knowledge, and engage in continuous self-directed learning.
Workload
24 hours per week including 6 contact hours plus 18 hours of independent study, or equivalent.
