This unit focuses on urban histories, theories, critiques and precedents from a range of fields that inform the disciplines and practices of urban professionals and researchers. You will gain critical capacities in relation to ethics and responsibilities, and the implications of urban positions and practices on multiple publics and the civic realm. Working in small groups and individually, you will engage with a wide range of material that enables critical reflections upon contributions to urban research and practice.

Learning outcomes
- Recognise that there are multiple histories, theories, perspectives and knowledges that inform an understanding of the disciplines and practices of urban professionals and civic engagement;
- Demonstrate an understanding and interpretation of urban histories and theories through group discussions, dialogues and documentation;
- Synthesise and critically integrate and evaluate information from multiple sources in order to develop and communicate a position on urban discourses and the roles of urban professionals and civic engagement;
- Develop and apply the skills of collaboration with your peers to find, reflect on, and translate relevant information across disciplines when undertaking research;
- Respectfully and ethically engage with existing knowledge, including Indigenous ways of knowing, source material and viewpoints, and the implications for urban practice;
- Develop independent learning, research and relational capabilities to inform the practice of architecture, urban planning and design in professional contexts.
