This unit develops knowledge and skills around the legal and administrative frameworks that underpin the implementation of planning in Australia, set within national and international contexts. You will critically analyse the roles and powers of governments, markets and communities, and their respective impacts on policy and planning instruments.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of historical and contemporary approaches to the governance and regulatory contexts that shape planning systems, both within Australia and in the broader global context;
- Apply research skills to gain an understanding of planning principles, frameworks, legal codes and policies in Australia and international contexts, and effectively apply them through planning instruments;
- Analyse the impacts of complex political and governance dynamics on urban planning processes, policies and decision-making;
- Effectively convey complex governance, policy and regulatory concepts using oral, written, visual and graphic communication formats;
- Reflect on the ethical dimensions of governance and regulatory decisions and their implications on communities and places, and consider the implications for urban planning and design practice;
- Adapt to evolving governance and regulatory challenges, seek new knowledge, and engage in continuous self-directed learning.
