Credit transfer
You can apply for credit for units you’ve successfully completed at another tertiary institution. We’ll need to assess your eligibility before we can grant credit.
Credit for previous studies can reduce the number of units you need to complete for your current course. This, in turn, may shorten the duration of your course and, if you’re an international student, limit how long your visa is valid.
Am I eligible?
You’ll need to apply for credit to have your eligibility assessed.
We assess different types of learning for equivalency to Monash study. These include formal learning taken through a structured program, as well as work-related, social, family, and leisure activities and experiences. If you have experience in a related field or similar study to the course you wish to enrol in, you should consider applying for credit towards your Monash course.
Credit search
You can use our credit search to see previous credit outcomes at Monash. This is a guide only and results don't guarantee you credit or entry to Monash, but will give you an idea of what credit other applicants have received.
If you can't find results
If you can't find any matching results for your prior studies, try a general search. For example, search by institution only.
If your country or school isn’t listed
If your country or institution isn't listed:
- Future students: Indicate your credit intention in your course application when applying to Monash.
- Commencing and current students: Submit a credit application online to have your previous studies assessed.
How to apply for credit
Future students
How you’re assessed for credit depends on whether you’re applying for your course through VTAC or directly to Monash.
Applying through VTAC
To apply for credit:
- Apply for the course you want through VTAC and wait for a course offer.
- Enrol in units to accept your course offer. You'll need to enrol into first year units to start with (these can be changed later).
- Apply for credit (make sure you include the necessary supporting documents).
After you’ve received the outcome of your application, you’ll be able to make changes to your enrolment based on what credit you’ve been awarded.
Applying directly to Monash
If you’re looking for credit for prior studies, you can tell us you want to be considered for a credit transfer in your application to study at Monash. Just make sure you upload supporting documents as evidence of your studies (e.g. a handbook or syllabus) – we might also ask you for more documents after you’ve submitted your application.
If you’d like credit for work experience, you can apply for a credit assessment once you’ve received and accepted your course offer.
How to apply to study at Monash has all the details about applying for a course.
Commencing and current students
Once you’ve received an offer from Monash and created your Monash account, you can log into your account and apply for credit. We recommend you accept your course offer (by enrolling in units) before you apply for credit, as your offer may lapse while you wait for a response.
For help, see the instructions for credit application (pdf, 0.27 mb).
When to apply
You should apply for credit well before starting your course, but we recommend you apply as early as possible. This gives you time to change your enrolment if you need to.
Applying too late might mean you’re not able to take advantage of credit awarded towards your course.
If you've already enrolled, you can change your enrolment once you’ve been given credit if it's awarded before the cut-off dates for adding or withdrawing units.
Course transfer applicants
When you apply for a course transfer, you can let us know you’d like to be considered for credit. You can also apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) when you apply to transfer – just make sure you include any supporting documents necessary. For more information on how to do this, including how to add supporting documents for study completed outside of Monash or RPL, take a look at our quick reference guide.
Supporting documents
If you studied at another university, you need to provide all of the following:
- An academic record/official transcript produced by the institution. If your transcript is not in English, you need to provide a certified translated copy.
- An explanation of what the results mean.
- A unit outline that includes the learning outcomes and assessment requirements for each unit you’re seeking credit for.
- Some postgraduate courses may award entry credit allowing different entry points on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), usually on the basis of relevant work experience. If the course you are applying for recognises RPL, you’ll be required to provide a current CV and letter of employment outlining the duration of your employment and your equivalent relevant experience. Take a look at the entry for your course in our find a course page to check if it recognises RPL and learn more about its past experience requirements.
- Results slips or electronic printouts are not official transcripts.
- We can’t accept transcripts through My eQuals that require a PIN or other authentication method
- This is usually found on the back of the transcript, like a grading scale, mark sheet or key.
- You could also provide a link to this information on the university’s website. Make sure it’s a public page that doesn’t require a login.
- Course handbooks may contain unit level information. If providing a link, ensure it doesn’t require a login.
Notification
Your application is assessed by the faculty managing your course – they may email you to request additional documents. Providing these documents quickly means your application won’t be delayed.
Future students
If you applied through VTAC, your faculty will email you the outcome of your credit application after you’ve accepted your course offer. You’ll receive your outcome within 10 to 20 University working days (this could take longer during peak admission and enrolment times).
If you applied directly to Monash, your credit assessment outcome will either be included in your offer to study at Monash or emailed to you shortly after.
Commencing and current students
We’ll email you with the outcome of your credit application within 10 to 20 University working days (this could take longer during peak admission and enrolment times).
Course transfer applicants
You’ll receive an email with both the outcome of your course transfer application and your credit assessment for Monash units. For more information on when you’ll be notified, see course or campus transfer.
Possible outcomes
Credit outcomes
There are different forms of credit that can be approved:
Block credit
Granted towards whole stages or components of a qualification, block credit doesn't involve individual student assessment. It's usually arranged through a credit transfer or articulation agreement with another education provider.
Specified credit
Specified credit is granted towards core or particular components in a qualification, identified by the Monash unit code.
Unspecified credit
Unspecified credit is granted towards components in a qualification where the Monash unit code is not specified. Credit is given for the credit point value and level of a Monash unit.
Limits on credit
There are limits on the maximum amount of credit we can grant you for a Monash course.
Where a Monash course is:
- 96 credit points or less – you must complete at least half of these credit points at Monash
- greater than 96 credit points – you must complete a minimum of 48 of these credit points at Monash
- a double degree – you must complete at least 48 credit points towards each component.
We'll assess your credit application, taking into account the level of your qualifications and the relevance of your previous study to the Monash course.
You can contact the faculty directly if you think they didn't grant enough credit for your prior studies or experience.
Maximum credit available
| Course length | Maximum credit |
|---|---|
| 1 semester (24 credit points total) | 12 credit points |
| 1 year (48 credit points total) | 24 credit points |
| 1.5 years (72 credit point total) | 36 credit points |
| 2 years (96 credit points total) | 48 credit points |
| 3 years (144 credit points total) | 96 credit points |
| 4 years (192 credit points total) | 144 credit points |
Revoking credit
While credit can reduce the number of units you need to complete a course, it may also result in not having enough spaces on your course map to complete a minor, major, extended major, or specialisation. Credit may also prevent you from going on exchange or taking work-related placement units. In these cases, you can apply to have some of your credit revoked.
You should get course advice before applying to revoke your credit.
How to apply
- Complete an Application to Revoke Credit (pdf, 0.22 mb).
- Submit an enquiry through MoVA with the application attached.
Notification of outcome
We’ll email you with the outcome of your credit application. This takes 10 to 20 business days, and may take longer during peak admission and enrolment times.
