Once you’re in your final teaching period, check when applications open so you can apply to graduate at the earliest possible time.
Graduation is not automatic. To graduate, you need to submit a graduation application through the Graduation Portal. You’ll be able to apply when you’re nearing completion of your degree. In most cases, you can apply before completing your course requirements.
You’ll need to select how you want to graduate, either by:
- attending a ceremony, or
- graduating in absentia.
If you’d like to attend a ceremony, you’ll need to pick your preferred graduation round (ceremonies are held in Australia, China, Indonesia and Malaysia throughout the year). You’ll be able to choose which month you’d like to graduate in, but you’re not able to request a particular date or time.
Payment
You can pay with an Australian credit or debit card (mastercard or visa), Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, or WeChat Pay.
You’ll need to pay for your graduation ceremony when you apply through the Graduation Portal.
Application tips
Studying more than one degree
- If you’re graduating with a bachelor’s and an honours degree, or with a bachelor's and a master's degree, you need to submit two applications – one for each award. There are two ways you can do this:Option 1 (recommended)Apply to graduate from your bachelor’s degree first then apply to graduate from your honours or master's degree when you finish at a later date. Each award certificate will show the date of your graduation – not the date you finish your studies. So the date on your bachelor's certificate will differ from the one on your honours or master's certificate. If you choose to graduate in two separate ceremonies, you’ll need to pay a ceremony fee for each of them.Option 2Apply to graduate from both your bachelor’s and honours degrees, or from both your bachelor's and master's degrees, at the same time, but with two simultaneous applications – one for each award. At the ceremony, you’ll be called on stage to receive your highest award. You’ll also wear the academic dress for that award. When the Chancellor hands you your graduation documents, the pouch will contain the testamurs for both of your awards. The graduation program will list you as being presented for the higher award and separately in absentia for the second award.Your graduation documents will show the same date for both awards, you just won't be called on stage to receive both.
- Submit a single graduation application for a double degree. But, if you want to have one of your degrees conferred before the other, you need to submit two applications – one for each award. You’ll need to apply for an alternative exit when you apply to graduate. Check with your faculty about the rules for your degrees.
- If you’re doing several different courses, you need to submit a graduation application for each course.Single ceremonyIf you choose to attend a single ceremony, you’ll be called on stage to receive your highest award. You’ll also wear the academic dress for that award. When the Chancellor hands you your graduation documents, the pouch will contain the testamurs for all of your awards. Your graduation documents will show the same date for both awards. The graduation program will list you as being presented for the higher award and will list your other awards separately in the in absentia section.Multiple ceremoniesIf you choose to graduate in multiple separate ceremonies, you’ll need to pay a ceremony fee for each of them.

After you apply

Attending a ceremony
If you’re attending a ceremony, we’ll start by emailing you around seven weeks before your ceremony (or conferral). This email will tell you the time and date of your ceremony, and it will allow you to confirm the award you’re graduating with and how your legal name will appear on your certificate. It will also include links for academic dress, photography and guest ticket booking.
Graduating in absentia
If you’re graduating in absentia, we’ll start by emailing you around seven weeks before your conferral. This email will let you know your conferral date and how to receive your documents. You’ll also be able to confirm the award you’re graduating with and how your legal name will appear on your certificate.
