Looking for more information about how something works behind the scenes? These protocols and processes cover the finer details of assessment and education for coursework courses, programs, and units in the Faculty of Business and Economics. These should be read in conjunction with relevant University policies and procedures.

Credit process

  1. Students applying for credit for prior learning must follow the University’s application processes.
  2. Credit assessments are made by assessors designated by the Dean.
  3. The Faculty will use relevant benchmarking tools to assess unit weightings, unit levels, and the amount of credit granted. These tools may include, but are not limited to, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific Credit Transfer Scheme (UCTS), and the Country Education Profiles issued by the Australian government.
  4. Credit will not be granted for study undertaken whilst a student is on intermission, deferment or suspension from a Faculty of Business and Economics course.
  5. Professional accreditation may restrict the amount of and type of credit that can be granted within certain courses, and may impose additional restrictions with respect to recency of study.
  6. Specified credit will not be granted for units that contribute to professional accreditation requirements where prior learning has taken place more than 10 years before the commencement of a Faculty course.
  7. For escalated (stage 2) student complaints regarding credit decisions, the appropriate contact is as per details on the Student Complaints and Grievances page.

Faculty assessment process

Unit assessment regime

  1. As a general guideline, the total length of assessment tasks for a 6 credit point unit should not exceed 6,000 words-equivalent. Each hour of an examination is treated as being equivalent to 1,000 words of assessment. This weighting of 6,000 words per 6 credit points is also applicable to 12, 18 and 24 credit point units (i.e. 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 words respectively).

Further information can be found at:

Scheduled final assessment

  1. Scheduled final assessment tasks must be prepared as per the University’s Scheduled Final Assessments Procedure, and must be approved by the Head of Department (or nominee).
  2. Heads of Department may specify further requirements of chief examiners, such as the preparation of model solutions for the examination questions. Any model solutions must be approved by an independent staff member.
  3. Final assessment tasks may allow for calculators to be listed as a specially permitted item. The current approved calculators in the Monash Business School are: HP10bII+ or Casio FX82 (any suffix). Special arrangements to provide greater flexibility with calculators may be approved by the Deputy Dean, Education on a semester basis.
  4. Possession of unauthorised materials or equipment during a scheduled final assessment is dealt with in accordance with the University Student Academic Integrity Procedure.

Feedback

Students may apply to view their examination script. Students may apply to receive individual feedback on their examination performance. Details regarding the application process and associated timelines for exam viewing and for receipt of feedback will be published on the Faculty’s Current Student webpages.

Internal coursework transfers business process

Purpose and Scope

This business process specifies the minimum eligibility requirements for current students seeking to transfer into faculty managed courses, the availability of places, and the timing of offers to eligible applicants. This process is applicable for Faculty coursework programs only.

1. Minimum eligibility requirements

1.1 In order to be eligible for consideration for course transfer, students must:

  • have completed a minimum of 12 credit points in their current Monash course, and have made application prior to commencement of their final 24 credit points of study;
  • have met any published prerequisite subjects (or equivalent), or any other course specific requirements for admission (e.g. work experience);
  • have achieved the minimum WAM as specified by the Faculty for the transfer period.

1.2 The minimum WAM required in order to be considered for internal transfer will be published on the Faculty Current Students website prior to the application period for internal course transfer.

1.3 Internal transfer is part of a competitive selection process and the actual WAM required for an offer to be made for admission to the course on the basis of internal transfer may

be higher than the published minimum.

1.4 The Faculty may consider applicants for internal transfer with a WAM below the published minimum where exceptional circumstances exist. Level of achievement and academic performance at the point of admission to the current course will be considered, however students must also have met any pre-requisite requirements of the destination course. Approval is subject to available places, and requires endorsement of the relevant Course Director. Partner faculties will be consulted where applicable for double degrees.

2. Availability of places and timing of offers

2.1 Approval for course transfer is subject to the availability of places in a course, including

any restrictions on Commonwealth supported and fee paying places.

2.2 Internal transfer is normally only available for students intending to commence their new

course in semester 1 or semester 2.

2.3 Students may be confirmed as eligible for an offer for transfer prior to release of results if they have otherwise met the minimum requirements for transfer at the point of application.
