Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and double degrees

Understand your course and the requirements you need to meet to complete your engineering degree.

Understand your course requirements

Your course has requirements that you must satisfy to graduate. Your course map clearly outlines, year by year, semester by semester, how to fulfil these requirements. Your handbook entry outlines the composition of your course and the rules you must follow to graduate including the additional requirements (CPD) for professional accreditation.

Course map

  • Your course map is a framework that shows core units, specialisation units and elective units.

If you are entering your course at level one you will need to pay special attention to your maths and physics preparation as this determines the semester you take your core units in.

Masters accelerated pathway students

You'll need to enrol in the level one units outlined in your course map for E3001 BE(Hons). Levels 2 and 3 of your program also follow the standard course map. We'll contact you later in your degree to advise you of the units you need to take in your final year of the program to accelerate your masters.

Engineering specialisation

A specialisation is a compulsory component of the BE(Hons) representing the major component of your engineering study. You must complete one specialisation for your degree. You normally nominate and commence studying your specialisation after you have completed the common first year of engineering (except for the Biomed specialisation, that commences in first year). You can nominate a specialisation via the Area of Study section in WES however it’s best to wait until you have completed your first year of study before doing this.

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) single degree specialisations:

  • Aerospace engineering
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical and computer systems engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Materials engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Robotics and mechatronics engineering
  • Software engineering.

Double degrees and specialisations

Not all specialisations are available within each double degree. A list of combinations is available.

Masters accelerated pathway - BE(Hons)/ME

The Masters accelerated pathway is available for the following specialisations within the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer Systems, Environmental, Materials, Mechanical, Robotics and Mechatronics (AI and Automation streams). The Master of Engineering is available in Biological engineering, Civil engineering, Electrical engineering, Materials engineering and Mechanical engineering.

Units you must enrol in (core units)

Engineering is a highly structured course, which makes it easy to follow as most units are compulsory.

There are four units to complete each semester if you are a full-time domestic or international student and two units to complete each semester if you are a part-time domestic student.

Mathematics and Physics preparation (foundation units)

Foundation units in maths and physics develop your understanding of the natural and physical sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines.

The sequencing of your engineering units is dependent on your level of maths and physics. You may have completed these units in your final year of school or in tertiary study however you will need to achieve a particular grade in the subject or you will need to complete them again to strengthen your foundation and prepare you for studying engineering.

ENG1090 Foundation mathematics (Sem 1) or MTH1020 (Sem 2) Analysis of change (equivalent to VCE Specialist Maths units 3 & 4)

If you have taken Gao Kao Maths you should enrol in Foundation maths. You don’t need to take foundation maths if you’ve completed:

  • VCE Specialist Maths (score of ≥30)
  • IB higher level maths (4 or above)
  • Interstate year 12 - enter 'Maths: Specialist Mathematics' into the VTAC conversion tool and select your state to identify your state's equivalent Specialist maths subject and score. Select the higher study score in instances in which your study score does not align with the required VCE 30 study score eg for Tasmania, your required score for the equivalent unit is 'CA' (translates to VCE study score of 31)
  • A Level mathematics (B or above)
  • MUFY Adv Maths 1 & 2 (≥ 65%+)
  • Monash College Diploma of Engineering Part 2
  • or any higher-level university maths with calculus (pass grade).

Maths is the language of engineering so if you’re not confident with calculus, strengthen your maths foundation by taking ENG1090. If you need to take foundation maths in your first semester with us, you must take ENG1005 in your second semester. You will need to have mastered the content of foundation maths to successfully complete ENG1005 Engineering maths.

PHS1001 Foundation physics (Sem 1) (equivalent to VCE Physics units 3 & 4)

You don’t need to take foundation physics if you’ve completed:

  • VCE, IB or A Level Physics (pass grade)
  • MUFY Physics (≥ 65%+)
  • Physics at a tertiary level (pass grade)
  • Monash College Diploma of Engineering Part 2
  • AP Physics 1 and 2 (pass grade). If you have only completed Physics 1 or Physics C you must take PHS1001 Foundation physics.

Engineering minors (single degree only)

BE(Hons) single degree students (except biomedical engineering) can take an engineering minor in another engineering discipline distinct from their engineering specialisation. You cannot take a minor from another faculty.

The minor is completed in levels 3 and 4 and takes the place of your technical electives. Available minors and requirements are outlined online. You can select the minor in WES in the Area of Study section. You cannot take an engineering minor if you are enrolled in the masters accelerated program and you plan to accelerate the masters degree.

Please note that double degree students exiting with a single degree are not eligible to undertake engineering minors even if they have completed the units required for the minor, unless they transfer into the single degree course (course code E3001) and complete both the course and minor requirements in the single degree course.

Electives

There are three different types of electives in the BE(Hons).

Engineering elective

  • taken at level 1 in the single degree and is selected from a pool of level 1 and 2 engineering, IT and science units that are relevant to engineering
  • taken in the BE(Hons) double degrees if the foundation units are not required. There is no space for an engineering elective if either or both foundation units are required in engineering double degrees
  • a list of eng electives is available under Part E of the handbook entry for your course
  • if you've just found out about the biomedical engineering specialisation you can take BMS1021 as your eng elective at Level 1. This unit is a compulsory at level 1 for the biomed specialisation and will ensure you can select this specialisation at the end of level 1 if you are interested in the discipline.

Free elective

  • can be selected from units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol
  • available at levels 1 and 2 of the single degree only (except for the biomedical engineering specialisation)
  • you can select another engineering elective as one of your free electives or select one of the level 2 technical electives listed online
  • you can complement your studies with a unit from another faculty. Common units taken by our students include physics (PHS1002), chemistry (CHMXXXX), maths (MTHXXXX), a language (ATSXXXX), building your career (ATS2743) or academic presentation skills (ATS2910)
  • there is no space in your BE(Hons) course structure to take free electives at levels 3 or 4.

Technical elective

a discipline specific engineering unit normally offered at level 3 and 4 in the single degree (except for the biomedical engineering specialisation that does not have room technical electives)

technical electives extend or complement your knowledge of your engineering specialisation and are critical to Engineers Australia accreditation for the single degree

a list of technical electives for your specialisation is available online. You cannot take units from outside of this prescribed list. If you take an engineering minor, you will not have space for the four technical electives at levels 3 and 4

technical electives are not available in the double degrees as elective space from both degrees is forfeited to allow for a shorter course duration.

Double degrees

You can refer to the course map and handbook entry below for assistance with which units to take as part of your partner faculty structure. Doubles degrees with Arts, Commerce and Science offer greater choice. Visit the links below to assist you with unit selection.

Applying for credit

You can apply for credit for completed university level subjects (not for TAFE units, micro-credentials, or work experience). If you are granted credit, you'll be awarded credit points towards the completion of your degree and you will not be required to complete those units. Search online for previous credit decisions to give you an idea of what you may be granted.

VCE Algorithmics

If you've completed units 3 & 4 VCE Algorithmics (HESS), you are eligible for one unit of credit FIT1045 Algorithms and programming fundamentals in python if you have elective space in your course.

Credit application outcome

You'll be notified via email of the outcome of your application if you apply after you have been offered a place. If you haven’t yet been notified, enrol in the required number of units to secure your place. You can change these when your application has been processed.

Enrol now

Now that you understand your course structure you can log onto WES and enrol in your units for the year.
