Congratulations on your offer and welcome to Monash IT.

This page outlines what you will study in the Bachelor of Information Technology and what you need to enrol in. It explains your core units, major requirements, electives, and enrolment planning.

Enrolling in units through WES is how you formally accept your offer.

How your degree is structured

Each course has specific requirements that must be met to graduate. Your course map outlines these requirements year by year and semester by semester.

The Bachelor of Information Technology includes:

  • 8 core (compulsory) units
  • 8 units in an IT major (at least one major is required)
  • 8 free electives

This totals 24 units (144 credit points).

Core units (compulsory)

You must complete all of the following core units to meet the requirements of your degree.:

  • FIT1045: Introduction to programming
  • FIT1047: Introduction to computer systems, networks and security
  • FIT1049: IT professional practice
  • FIT2001: Systems development
  • FIT2002: IT project management
  • FIT2094: Databases
  • FIT3047: Industry experience project studio 1 or FIT3039: Studio project 1
  • FIT3048: Industry experience studio project 2 or FIT3040: Studio project 2

These units develop your programming, systems, project management, professional practice, and final-year project skills.

All core units must be completed to graduate.

Units, year levels and credit points

Each unit has a code and name. For example, FIT1045 Introduction to programming. The first digit indicates the year level.

Across your degree:

  • First-year units (FIT1xxx): normally 8 units (48 points), maximum 10 units (60 points)
  • Third-year units (FIT3xxx): minimum 6 units (36 points)
  • Most units are worth 6 credit points
  • 24 units × 6 credit points = 144 credit points required

All prerequisites and corequisites must be met before enrolling in a unit.

Majors (compulsory)

You must complete at least one IT major. A major consists of eight units studied over at least three years.

Once selected, you must complete all core units within that major.

Available IT majors:

When enrolling in WES, you will nominate your major (called your “Area of Study”). You can change this during your first year.

Your major determines your major core units and may influence your electives.

Choose a major that aligns with your career interests. Many students keep options open in first year before finalising their choice.

Minors and elective options

You will complete 8 free electives. Depending on your major, you may also complete up to three additional FIT electives.

Electives can be used to:

  • Complete a second BInfoTech major*
  • Complete one or two minors
  • Complete a major from another faculty
  • Select individual units of interest

*If completing a second IT major, up to two units may be cross-counted. This also applies to minors.

Available IT minors include:

*Some minors include units with Year 12 mathematics or MTH1010 prerequisites.

You may also select units outside IT. Refer to the Handbook for full major and minor details.

If unsure how electives fit into your course, check your course map.

Course maps and enrolment planning

Course maps show the recommended progression for each major, including core, major, and elective units.

Always refer to the course map for the year you commenced.

If you are commencing:

  • Semester 1 (February/March): enrol in Semester 1 and Semester 2
  • Semester 2 (July): enrol in Semester 2 only

Domestic full-time students normally enrol in four units per semester.

International students on a student visa must enrol in four units per semester.

First-year students may need to choose two or three electives depending on major and start semester.

Students commencing in a non-standard semester or from the Monash College Diploma of IT should refer to the relevant course map listed under Quick Facts.

Credit for prior learning

You may apply for credit for completed Diploma-level TAFE or university study.

If granted:

  • Credit points will count toward your degree
  • You will not need to complete equivalent units

You can search previous credit decisions online before applying.

Students who completed Units 3 & 4 VCE Algorithmics (HESS) are eligible for 12 credit points: FIT1045 and a Level 1 FIT elective.

Credit applications are submitted online after creating your Monash computer account. You must provide transcripts and detailed unit outlines.

If you have already applied for credit, refer to your course map and enrol in the remaining required units.

Industry Based Learning (IBL)

You may apply for an Industry-Based Learning placement during your degree.

While completing IBL:

  • You cannot enrol in on-campus units
  • Careful planning is required
  • International students may need to overload or complete summer/winter units to maintain duration

IBL replaces:

Depending on your major, one additional specified FIT unit may also be replaced. Refer to your major course map.

Students who do not complete IBL must complete a third-year capstone project. Prerequisites are listed in the Handbook.
