This page helps you understand what to enrol in for the first year of your double degree with Information Technology or Computer Science. Enrolling in units through WES is how you formally accept your offer.

How your degree is structured

In a double degree, you complete the requirements of two separate degrees within an integrated program.

For most double degrees:

  • You will normally study four units per semester
  • Typically two units from each degree, each semester

Your IT component (Information Technology or Computer Science) includes:

  • 8 core (compulsory) units
  • 8 units in your IT major (for BInfoTech) or
  • 8 units in a Computer Science specialisation

Your course map outlines the recommended sequence for both sides of your degree. Always refer to the course map for the year you commenced.

Double degree options

Refer to the Handbook entry for your specific course code.

IT majors and Computer Science specialisations

In your double degree, you must choose either:

  • An IT major (Bachelor of Information Technology), or
  • A Computer Science specialisation (Bachelor of Computer Science)

IT majors (BInfoTech)

You must complete at least one IT major.

IT minors

You may complete a minor in your IT degree if you have sufficient elective space. Minors consist of four units.

Available IT minors include:

**This minor contains a unit that has a prerequisite of Year 12 maths or MTH1010 or equivalent AND a unit that has Level 1 mathematics prerequisites.

Computer Science specialisations (BCompSc)

Some specialisations are not available in all double degrees. If you complete a named specialisation, your award title will reflect this.

You must also consider the major or specialisation requirements for the non-IT side of your degree. Refer to the relevant Faculty website and course map.

Units, year levels and credit requirements

Units have a code and a name (e.g. FIT1045 Introduction to programming). The first digit indicates the year level.

Across your IT component:

  • First-year units (FIT1xxx): normally 8 units (48 points), maximum 10 units (60 points)
  • Third-year units (FIT3xxx): minimum 6 units (36 points)

Note: These limits may vary depending on your double degree. Confirm year level requirements with your managing Faculty.

Unless specified, units are worth 6 credit points.

All prerequisite and corequisite requirements must be met before enrolling in a unit.

Course maps and enrolment planning

Course maps outline the recommended progression for each degree combination. You may need to refer to:

  • The IT course map
  • A separate course map for the non-IT degree

Recommended sequencing will vary depending on your double degree.

Undergraduate IT course maps are available on the IT website.

In most double degrees:

  • You will normally choose four units per semester
  • Typically two units from each degree

If you are commencing:

  • February/March – enrol in Semester 1 and Semester 2
  • July – enrol in Semester 2 only

Domestic students normally enrol in four units per semester. International students must enrol in four units per semester.

Because you are completing two degrees, you may have few or no free electives available.

Credit for prior learning

You may apply for credit for completed TAFE (Diploma level and above) or university-level study.

If granted:

  • You will receive credit points towards your degree
  • You will not be required to complete the equivalent units

If you completed Units 3 & 4 VCE Algorithmics (HESS), you are eligible for credit for FIT1045 (6 points) in your double degree.

If you applied for credit as part of your course application, your credit has already been processed. Refer to your course map and enrol in the remaining required units.

If you have not applied yet, you may submit a credit application online.

You will be notified once your credit has been processed. If further information is required, you will be contacted.

Industry Based Learning (IBL) and capstone projects

If you plan to apply for an Industry Based Learning (IBL) placement, careful planning is required.

While completing IBL:

  • You cannot enrol in on-campus units
  • Core requirements must be completed outside the IBL semester

An IBL placement replaces the final-year project units relevant to your major or specialisation and, depending on your program, one additional FIT unit. Refer to your specific course map for details.

Students who do not complete IBL must complete a capstone project in their final year.
