Unit assessment regime

As a general guideline, the total length of assessment tasks for a 6 credit point unit should not exceed 6,000 words-equivalent. Each hour of an examination is treated as being equivalent to 1,000 words of assessment. This weighting of 6,000 words per 6 credit points is also applicable to 12, 18 and 24 credit point units (i.e. 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 words respectively).

Scheduled final assessment

Scheduled final assessment tasks must be prepared as per the University’s Scheduled Final Assessments Procedure, and must be approved by the Head of Department (or nominee).
Heads of Department may specify further requirements of chief examiners, such as the preparation of model solutions for the examination questions. Any model solutions must be approved by an independent staff member.
Final assessment tasks may allow for calculators to be listed as a specially permitted item. The current approved calculators in the Monash Business School are: HP10bII+ or Casio FX82 (any suffix). Special arrangements to provide greater flexibility with calculators may be approved by the Deputy Dean, Education on a semester basis.
Possession of unauthorised materials or equipment during a scheduled final assessment is dealt with in accordance with the University Student Academic Integrity Procedure.

Students may apply to view their examination script. Students may apply to receive individual feedback on their examination performance. How do I apply for special consideration?

All campuses

Special consideration covers short-term circumstances outside your control that affected an assessment. Apply online with the special consideration form; the same form is used for a short extension and for an extension through special consideration. You can't ask your chief examiner for an extension. Apply as soon as you can, no later than 11.55pm on the day the assessment is due or scheduled, and attach supporting documents. Deferring a final assessment is a separate application. Check the official page for the exact rules before you apply.

What is a hurdle, and what happens if I fail one?

All campuses

A hurdle is an assessment requirement you have to meet to pass the unit, whatever your other marks add up to. If you complete and fail a competency hurdle, the chief examiner must give you at least one additional assessment on the same learning outcomes; you do not apply for it, and it is due by the end of the teaching period. Special consideration does not apply to it, and if the hurdle is weighted the most you can get for the task is 50%. If you still have not met the hurdle and your mark is 45 or more, your result is NH (Hurdle Fail) 45; below 45 it is N with your mark. A failed hurdle does not lead to a supplementary assessment. Can I get a supplementary assessment?

All campuses

If you finish a unit with a mark of 45 to 49, a grade of N or NH, and your results show NS, you have already been given a supplementary assessment - there is nothing to apply for. Not every unit offers one; its Handbook entry says. It is optional and it is your last chance to pass the unit: pass it and your result becomes 50 (P), which is the most you can get; fail it or skip it and you keep your original mark. It is held on a set date within 90 days of results release. You can't reschedule it; special arrangements only cover a time-zone clash. Retaking the unit instead can earn a higher mark for your WAM, but costs another enrolment.
