What is a Monash sourced placement?

  • The IE team contact a host organisation and arrange specifically defined placements.
  • ALL host organisations must meet Monash University OHS guidelines and be approved to be part of the IE program

Do you get paid?

Monash Sourced Placements are unpaid opportunities for students eligible to undertake these as academic units.

What types of Monash sourced placements can you do?

The IE team find placements that are in the following 9 general placement categories:

  • Accounting
  • Business administration – general business
  • Human resources
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Banking and Finance
  • Marketing
  • International Business
  • Economics
  • Econometrics and Business Statistics

There are many variations to these general categories and we have over 400 partner host organisations so a wide range of options are available.

What type of work is required for a placement?

  • We seek placements that are meaningful and relevant to your studies – not running coffee!
  • We will provide you with an placement description prior to your host interview that will state the aims and duties of your placement
  • We will also ensure that what you have learned in your course will be applied during your time with the host organisation.

What does the host need to do?

  • Appoint a mentor/supervisor for the student
  • Provide meaningful work with the opportunity to experience a real-world professional environment in their workplace (Monash Business School placements)
  • Provide a safe working environment (hosts will need to complete an OHS form when setting up the placement and provide information regarding their public liability insurance).
  • Monash University has a Personal Accident Insurance Policy which provides capital, medical and loss of income benefits for all currently enrolled Monash University students.
  • Provide a minimum of 15 Days (for 6 CP), 30 Days (for 12 CP) and 60 Days (for 24 CP) of work – these are determined before placements are confirmed.

There is NO obligation for hosts to set assignments for students. Assessment is arranged by faculty. Students may seek advice from the host around their assignments, but there is no obligation for hosts to be involved in academic assessments. Hosts will be asked to complete a survey at the end of the placement.

How to apply

Onshore applications

Step 1 – Eligibility

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have available credit points in your course to fit your IE unit. IE units can usually be taken in place of elective or capstone units, or a combination of both.

We encourage you to use the Monash University handbook from the year you started your course for guidance. To access accurate course advice and a new course plan, please contact the Monash University Course Advice team.

For your application to be considered, you must have a minimum WAM of 60.

Step 2 – Prepare your IE application and supporting document

Resume

You will need to provide your updated resume. Please save the file as a Word document and name the file as: First Name - Last Name - Resume.doc

Careers and employability can provide you with assistance on writing your resume in workshops and online assistance. Careers and employability also provides access to sample resumes. If you haven't already done so, please enrol first to access these resources.

Placement proposal

We will use your responses to the Placement Proposal questions below to assess your application and shortlist you. Your responses may also be shared with the host organisation when we send your resume. Please find below the first two questions along with some information on what we need to know:

  1. Please describe what type of placement you would be interested in. We would love to hear from you about what kind of placement you are looking for and what you hope to gain from your experience! It's important to think about the industry, type of company/organisation, and the specific work or tasks you would like to take on during your placement. Please keep in mind that we can't guarantee that you will be matched with your ideal placement. With that in mind, we recommend that you approach the Industry Experience Placement Program with an open mind and a willingness to explore various opportunities.
  2. Please identify 2–3 key skills you will bring to a potential host and how these skills will add value to the organisation. Your response should showcase your capabilities with an example demonstrating both technical and interpersonal skills. Please indicate your proficiency level in these skills (Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced). Additionally, highlight areas where you aim to develop and improve during the placement, such as technical skills, communication, or teamwork.

Step 3 – Submit your application

  1. Once you have completed the required documents, you can begin your online application.
  2. To submit your application log into your Monash student placement portal (InPlace) and submit an online IE placement application.
  3. Your Placement proposal: Remember to complete your placement proposal by answering all mandatory questions. This will be used to assess your application and match you with the most suitable host organisations. You can access the placement proposal by clicking on the 'My details' tab on the top right corner of your InPlace home page.
  4. Please complete all information requested in the online application form, including the unit you are planning to enrol in.
  5. Please upload your resume/CV in the 'Documents' box before submitting your application.
  6. Please apply for only one opportunity in any one teaching period. You will need to first select 'onshore' or 'offshore' and then the 'unit code'.
  1. For assistance with your online application, see the step-by-step guide.
  1. Applying for more than one opportunity will NOT influence your application's successful outcome.
  2. If you apply for more than one opportunity, only one application will be considered and all other applications in the same teaching period will be automatically rejected.

Step 4 – Application assessment and interviews

What to expect:

  1. After your application has been submitted, we will send you an application acknowledgement email. From then it will take up to 10 business days for us to review your application.
  2. Your eligibility will be assessed and your application will be checked to ensure we have all the information we need. We’ll contact you if we need further information.
  3. You will be asked to complete an online video interview as part of the application – to prepare for this, please use the Careers and employability Interview360 tool to access IE application practice interview questions.
  4. We will identify a host organisation that aligns with the information you have provided in the Placement proposal, and we will reach out to you once we have found a suitable match. Your resume, along with your proposal answers and video interview, may be forwarded to the host organisation. Following this, you may be invited to attend an interview with them. Once you have been shortlisted, we will email you to let you know when host interviews will be conducted. Please ensure your availability during the dates specified in that email for the interview with the host organisation.

Please remember that this is a very competitive process and if you are not available for an interview during the specified dates you may not gain a placement.

Step 5 – Outcome advice, placement agreements and enrolment

  1. After you have been interviewed by your host organization, we’ll get in touch to let you know the final outcome of your application. This may be as late as O-week depending on when you submitted your application and the type of placement you are applying for.
  2. We’ll send you a confirmation email with a Placement Agreement attached. You will need to sign and return the Placement Agreement via InPlace to finalise the application process and accept the placement. Once the signed agreement is received your enrolment will be processed and you’ll need to confirm it in WES.

Step 6 – Moodle unit assessment and information

Moodle

You’ll get access to the relevant Moodle site where you’ll find all the information about your assessment.

Induction

In order for you to understand what to expect during your industry placement, you are required to attend an Induction Session, which will cover important information regarding assessment and very useful workplace information. Please note your student card will be scanned to confirm your attendance and those who don't attend will be contacted.

You will receive details of the session in your placement confirmation email.
