How to use your digital M-Pass
Your iPhone or Apple Watch must be turned on to use your digital M-Pass, but it doesn't have to be connected to a network.
If you have an iPhone, Express Mode lets you use your M-Pass without unlocking your phone or watch – just tap your device on the reader.
To display your M-Pass, open Apple Wallet and select your M-Pass from your saved passes.
You can also find contact information for Monash Connect on the M-Pass menu in the Apple Wallet.
You don’t need to unlock your phone or have your digital M-Pass open in Google Wallet to use it (but on some devices the screen must be turned on).
The antenna is often in the middle of the phone, but it may vary by device, so you might have to adjust the orientation of your phone against the reader to have your digital M-Pass recognised.
To display your digital M-Pass, just open the Google Wallet.
You can also find contact information for Monash Connect on the M-Pass menu in Google Wallet.

Device requirements
Make sure your device meets the following requirements before you set up your M-Pass:
- iPhone: iPhone 8 or later (iOS 16 or later)
- Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 1 or later (Watch OS 5 or later)
- Android Phone: Version 10 or later (your device has to be NFC-enabled and capable of supporting Google Wallet). Android Wear OS is not currently eligible for digital M-Pass.
Adding your digital M-Pass to a new device
You can only have either one iPhone and one Apple Watch, or one Android phone on your account at a time. To set up your digital M-Pass on a new device, you’ll first have to remove it from your old devices.
Once you’ve done so, just follow the steps on setting up your digital M-Pass to add your M-Pass to your new device.
Removing your digital M-Pass
- Open Apple Wallet.
- Select your M-Pass from the available cards.
- Tap the three dots (...) or the i button in the top-right corner of your card.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Remove Card.
You can add your digital M-Pass back at any time (as long as you haven’t exceeded your card limit).
- Go to the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and select Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Select your M-Pass from the available cards.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Remove Card.
- Open Google Wallet.
- Select your M-Pass from the available cards.
- Touch the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Select Remove ID.
- Confirm Remove ID selection.
Removing your digital M-Pass from a device you no longer have
If you’d like to set up your digital M-Pass on a new device but you don't have your old one, submit an enquiry through MoVA or contact Monash Connect.
Lost or stolen devices?
If you’ve lost your device with your digital M-Pass on it, or suspect it's been stolen, you should immediately:
- Deactivate your M-Pass: submit an enquiry through MoVA and we’ll deactivate it for you – just make sure you let us know whether you need to deactivate a digital M-pass on your phone or watch.
- Call Security on 9902 7777 to deactivate your access straight away, if you have access to highly secure buildings.
- Notify the library either in person (at any branch) or call 9905 5054 to prevent others from using your card to borrow books.
When you deactivate your M-Pass:
- payments from your M-Pass account are immediately suspended
- building access is deactivated overnight.
If you find your phone or watch, you can reactivate your M-Pass by submitting an enquiry through MoVA.
Troubleshooting tips
Scanning issues
If you’re struggling to scan your digital M-Pass, it could be because:
- you’ve set up your digital M-Pass in the last few hours (you have to wait two hours minimum before you can scan it)
- you’re tapping the bottom half of your phone against the reader instead of the top half
- your screen is inactive while you are tapping (you don’t have to unlock your phone for your M-Pass to scan, but the screen should be lit up).
Multiple M-Passes
Keeping your M-Pass card
If you’ve already set up your digital M-Pass, your card will still work for now (except for printing – you’ll need to use your digital M-Pass for that).
If you need an M-Pass card to access a secure lab (e.g. PC2, PC3 lab), you’ll first need to get a digital M-Pass before requesting an M-Pass card.
Having both a student and a staff M-Pass
Only one student or staff ID can be created as a digital M-Pass, so you’ll have to keep your physical card for the other one.
If you’re both a student and staff member and organising your M-Pass for the first time, you need to:
- set up a digital M-Pass for your student account, and
- submit an enquiry through MoVA to request an M-Pass card for your staff account.
