What this page covers

Page text

Text and tables taken from the official page, with collapsed sections opened, so it can be read and searched here. Images and forms are not copied, so open the original page when you need to apply or submit something.

When you're ready to start your application, go to the myApp portal.

This guide is not for re-admission, Higher Doctorate, or joint PhD applications (where Monash is the host) as there are different application processes for these outlined on our how to apply page.

Before you start

Supporting documents

You’ll need to provide supporting documents as part of your application. It’s a good idea to have all your documentation on hand before you start. If you’re doing a performance-based PhD, you may be asked for additional information and supporting documents.

If any of your documents are not in English, you need to provide certified translated copies. Our preference is translations made by NAATI-qualified translators. You’ll find more information on the certifying documents page. It’s important to get your documentation right, otherwise it may hold up your application.

If you’re currently enrolled and applying to transfer to another Monash research degree (e.g. PhD to Master's or Master's to PhD), you should also upload a document outlining the reasons for your transfer request.

An academic resumé (CV) is required as part of your application. Your CV should include:

  • academic qualifications
  • scholarships and awards
  • relevant employment
  • publications, exhibitions or performances.

Course transfers

If you're transferring from one Monash graduate research degree to another – and are currently receiving a centrally allocated scholarship and your research project is unchanged – you don’t need to reapply for a scholarship. For more information, see the Transfer between graduate research degrees section of the scholarship policy and procedures.

How to submit an application

Sign up and log in

  1. Create an account by clicking Sign up.
  2. Follow the steps and confirm your email address to activate your My.App account.
  3. Register with a personal email address (not an email from another education provider or workplace). This will ensure you don’t have accessibility issues at a later date.
  4. Provide a phone number for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). You’ll receive an email after you register – check your spam or junk folder if the email does not arrive in your inbox. If you don’t receive it, contact Monash Connect.
  5. Use the email address you signed up with to log in to My.App.

If you forget your password, you can reset it by following the link on the login page.

Note: If you are a currently enrolled graduate research student applying only for a scholarship, please use the Graduate Research Scholarship Only Application Login button if you have not previously submitted a graduate research application in myApp. Use your Monash email address for the OKTA login screen.

You’ll need to provide your:

  • personal details
  • contact information

You’ll also need to let us know if you’ve changed your name or previously studied at, or applied to, Monash University.

Make sure you select Other Nationality as your citizenship type if you're:

  • evidence of change of name (if applicable).

Application details

You’ll need to provide your:

  • faculty
  • academic unit
  • course

You can only submit one application per scholarship round or admission period (i.e. January – June and July – December). You won’t be able to submit multiple applications if you’re undecided on your preferred course or faculty.

Proposed commencement date

Make sure your proposed date aligns with the preferred commencement dates as specified by your faculty.

Attendance type

If you’re applying for a scholarship as a part-time student, you need to provide a document detailing the compelling reasons why you’re unable to study full-time (including a medical certificate, if applicable). This document will need to be uploaded in the Documents section.

Scholarships are not generally available for external/off-campus study. Refer to the scholarship policy and procedures for eligibility requirements.

Previous applications for a research degree at Monash

If this isn’t your first time applying for a research degree at Monash, you’ll be asked to outline the differences between this application and your previous applications.

Make sure you review the application details summary before continuing.

Supporting documents

You'll need to upload a statement addressing your part-time scholarship eligibility (if applicable) in the Documents section, as well as a copy of your curriculum vitae (CV).

Make sure you provide a maximum of two pages of CV outlining aspects of your education, research and experience that have not been captured in your application to date, such as:

  • other qualifications relevant to your proposed research program (e.g. professional training or accreditation programs)
  • other awards, prizes or scholarships that recognise your achievements
  • other outputs such as presentations, papers, performances, designs, patents or works that demonstrate your understanding of the subject area or your ability to complete research and related activities
  • research experience
  • work experience.

If you're applying for a graduate research degree through a professional pathway, make sure your professional experience is outlined in detail in your CV. You can also include an additional statement on how your professional experience demonstrates a capacity to carry out independent research and is related to your proposed research topic. Take a look at our Graduate Research entry pathways page for further information.

If you have any career disruptions that have impacted your academic achievements, you may wish to provide an accompanying statement outlining the disruptions using our Career Break Statement form.

  4. Research program funding: You’ll need to indicate if you currently hold – or will be applying for – any other scholarships or awards. Note: If you are submitting a scholarship application for study at Monash Australia, and you are applying only for the centrally allocated scholarships (e.g. RTP Stipend, Monash Graduate Scholarship), you do not need to answer this question. If you’re transferring to Monash from another higher education provider (HEP) and hold an RTP Stipend, you may apply to transfer that scholarship. You will need to include evidence of the RTP Stipend from the previous HEP.
