Understanding your course requirements

Your course information is available in the Monash Handbook. You need to complete a total of 144 credit points (24 units) for your course.

The course structure consists of:

  • Part A. Science specified study (48 credit points / 8 units)
  • Part B. Science listed major (48 credit points / 8 units)
  • Part C. Free elective study (48 credit points / 8 units)

Course rules:

  1. When choosing your units, you will need to complete 6 science listed units (36 credit points) at Level 1, and 10 science listed units (60 credit points) at Levels 2 and 3 with a minimum of 4 units (24 credit points) at Level 3.
  2. You can only complete no more than 10 units of Level 1 (60 credit points) across your degree (these include core and elective units of Science and non-Science).
  3. To progress in the course you must complete the Level 1 sequences at stage one before enrolling in Level 2 science units.

Enrolment in the General Studies course is a Malaysian government requirement for all students studying in Malaysia. Please refer to the General Studies website for more information.

Choosing your area of study (major)

During your science course, you need to complete at least one science major/extended major. A major is an area of specialisation, and is achieved by completing specific groups of science units.

Bachelor of Science gives you the advantage to tailor your course to your interests, and you can use your free electives to complete another major (science or non-science), or complete an extended major in your science area of interest or a minor in another science area.

Not all area of studies listed in the handbook are available in Malaysia. The major, extended major and minors offered in Malaysia are listed below.

You should explore more on the majors in detail under the ‘Requirements’, Part B. Science listed major”.

Course Planning and Progression

Each unit has a unit code consisting of 3 alphabets and 4 digits. The first digit refers to the year level. For example, BIO1011 is a level one unit and GEN2041 is a level two unit.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (on a student VISA): You must enrol in four units in each semester.

Year 1 Progression

In Year 1, the followings are the units that you have to enrol in:

  1. You must choose two approved level one science sequences (24 credit points).
  2. SCI1020 Introduction to statistical reasoning
  3. SCI1000 Science communication to influence change
  4. Free electives: You can either choose to enrol in Science units or you can enrol in non-Science units (from other schools).

The sequences information can be found under ‘Requirements’, Part A. Science specified study. Make sure at least one of these sequences corresponds with the science major you would like to complete (as outlined in the table below).

Level one approved sequences and related majors - The table below details compulsory sequence for each major and the 2nd sequence available to you.

* Example: If you are majoring in Applied microbiology, your first sequence will be BIO1011 and BIO1022. You will have to choose the second sequence from either the CHM sequence (CHM1051 + CHM1052) or the PSY sequence (PSY1011 + PSY1023)

Course map

The course map provides you an overview of your whole course and guidance on how to plan unit enrolment for each semester for each major. It should be read together with the Bachelor of Science course requirement.

Notes:

  • You can choose up to 8 elective units offered by School of Science or other schools of Monash University Malaysia. You can also use Monash Handbook to search for units.
  • When you have two majors, no more than two units can be shared towards the two majors, or a major and a minor. The same unit is not normally credited to two minors.
  • If the second major is a major from another school, please check the Monash Handbook that the major is offered in Malaysia and offered in the year intake that you came in.

Please complete your unit enrolment via Web Enrolment System (WES) by Friday of Week 2 of the respective semesters. You can watch the video on How to enrol your unit(s) via WES. Refer to the principal dates website to take note of important dates.
