KPT/JPT (R2/521/6/0099) 03/27 - MQA/FA7520

Set the future in motion with a globally recognised mechanical engineering program.

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) is a four-year honours bachelor’s degree that equips students with engineering fundamentals, engineering sciences, and professional engineering practice required to solve complex mechanical engineering problems in modern engineering environments.

Mechanical engineering focuses on the efficient use of energy in the design and function of all types of mechanisms, from the simplest to the most complex. It builds on engineering principles of physics, chemistry, materials, mathematics and biology to achieve engineering goals.

As a mechanical engineer, you might design automatic control systems or take charge of the operation of a smart building. You could manage the water supply for a whole state and design wind turbines or highly efficient, low-cost products for the developing world.

In the diverse and challenging field of mechanical engineering, your role as a mechanical engineer could take you into various industries. You might be called on to work with the medical profession to create robots that can operate with greater precision than a human, or be at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing using 3D printers to create aircraft parts with elegance and function.

Growth industries include advanced manufacturing, smart buildings, renewable energy, medical engineering, and consulting practice, where mechanical engineers play pivotal roles.

What Is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is a broad discipline concerned with the design, development, and optimisation of mechanical systems and complex mechanical engineering activities. Students learn to apply first principles, analytical methods, and appropriate techniques to address real-world engineering challenges.

As a mechanical engineering graduate, you may work on:

  • Automatic control and smart building systems
  • Renewable energy technologies and net- zero carbon initiatives
  • Advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0 applications
  • Biomedical engineering and medical device design
  • Fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamic systems
  • Growth industries include advanced manufacturing, sustainable development, smart infrastructure, renewable energy, medical engineering, and consulting practice.

Common First Year – Engineering Fundamentals

In the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) program, the common first year lays a foundation in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and introduces the disciplines available to you for further studies. You'll learn to apply your developing math and science knowledge to real-life engineering problems and begin to understand the interaction between engineering and society.

Level Two – Mechanical Engineering Program Focus

From Level Two, you will specialise in mechanical engineering, building research-based knowledge in engineering sciences, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and engineering design. Emphasis is placed on solving complex engineering problems using analytical and computational tools.

Level Three – Professional Engineering Practice

At level three, your studies are extended to a professional level, and you're encouraged to learn independently by using the wide range of learning resources available to you.

Level Four – Final Year Project and Specialisation

At level four, you'll undertake an independent full-year project in an area of personal interest. The results of this project are presented and examined in the thesis. In addition, you'll complete core units including professional engineering practice, an integrated design project unit, plus four engineering units offering a scope for specialisation.

Quality education

Monash University is ranked #70 in the world for mechanical engineering (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026) and rated Tier 5 (Excellent) in D-Setara Engineering by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) degree is accredited by Engineers Australia and the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia. It is also recognised by the Washington Accord, which means that our mechanical engineering graduates can work in any other signatory country without the need to requalify.

The common first year

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has a common first year, allowing you to experience a range of disciplines before deciding on a specialisation. You'll develop your foundational skills for engineering before deciding which of the six specialisations to pursue in your second year.

Participate in design competitions

Engineering competitions are great opportunities to hone your skills, gain real-world exposure, and may well be a stepping stone to greater things. Our students have participated in numerous challenges, most notably Shell Eco-marathon Asia, Thailand SAE Auto Challenge-Student Formula, and Warman Design and Build Competition in Sydney, Australia.

An industry-focused course

Choose from locally developed elective units that are aligned with current industry needs, such as reliability engineering, non-destructive testing, engineering acoustics, biomedical engineering, healthcare systems, clean energy materials, and more. You'll also be better prepared for the workplace with industry-based final-year projects.

Take it to the next level

Challenge yourself with master's-level elective units in the area of applied mechanical engineering courses, including energy and sustainability.

Gain work experience

Work experience amplifies your learning and hones your hands-on skills. As part of your course, you'll complete a 12-week work placement after your third year. Our students have interned with companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Gamuda, IBM, and more.

Kick-start your professional development

The Student Leaders Network program allows you to engage with industry professionals through workshops, industry site visits, networking evenings, and a leadership summit over the course of a year. You'll develop critical leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.

Join an engineering student club

Our student-run clubs let you learn new skills and engage with industry to broaden your networks. You’ll get hands-on with real-world projects and competitions as you work in multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative products or drive positive change.

Try your hand at research

Apply for the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program to experience a genuine research environment. You’ll learn from leading researchers and acquire knowledge and skills to prepare you for your final year project and higher degree studies.

Volunteer with Engineers Without Borders

The Monash University Malaysia student chapter is involved in a wide range of projects benefiting local communities. Our engineering students have helped to install a micro hydro generator for a school in Budok Aru, constructed a workshop for a shelter home, renovated refugee schools, and more.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) pursue careers in:

  • mechanical and electrical consultancy
  • research and development
  • automotive industry

Prerequisites

Mathematics (Australian Higher Year 12 equivalent) and at least one of Chemistry, Physics or Biology (Australian Year 12 equivalent) are formal prerequisites for the Bachelor of Engineering.

Courses with maths and science prerequisite subjects

If the course you are applying for requires maths and/or science as prerequisite subjects, you can meet the requirements in the following ways:

  • Australian Year 12 or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme: You must meet the maths and/or science prerequisite subject required for your chosen course as specified above.
  • Other qualifications recognised by Monash: If you have completed maths and/or science subjects in the relevant discipline at the required grade level, it is assumed that you have knowledge equivalent to the Australian Year 12 (VCE equivalent) prerequisite subject required for your chosen course. It is strongly recommended that you check that you have covered the assumed knowledge required for your course by completing the Assumed Knowledge Skills Analysis. This online activity includes multiple-choice questions based on your prior studies and helps you identify areas for revision, so you can start your course feeling confident and prepared. Once you accept your Monash offer and set up your student account you can complete the Assumed Knowledge Skills Analysis before starting your course.

These guidelines do not apply to the Bachelor of Medical Science or Doctor of Medicine.

"I chose Monash because of its academic and research excellence. But as I did my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, I came to appreciate the meaningful journey and connections made along the way, and I realised that for me, this is what truly sets Monash apart from the other institutions."
