What can I expect after signing up through the Google forms?
After the triage team pairs you up with an available counselling or clinical psychology trainee, you will receive a confirmation via email. The trainees will be in touch with you to schedule a first session with them. If you do not hear from them, email us at fledge@monash.edu.
I know someone whom I would like to recommend the services to. Can I sign them up?
For the sake of clients’ wellbeing, we highly recommend that all clients sign-up and attend sessions on their own accord rather than being coerced or pressured by others to attend counselling. You may let them know about the availability of our services if they wish to talk to someone.
Can I sign up even though I do not live in Malaysia?
If you are currently living outside of Malaysia, we would encourage you to seek support services within your country of residence where possible. Sessions and service information
Are all services free here?
Monash FLEDGE Centre is first and foremost a teaching clinic that serves as a training ground for future counsellors and clinical psychologists. The services are provided by Monash University Malaysia counselling and clinical psychology trainees who are currently in practicum training. The practicum counsellors are supervised by experienced and licensed mental health professionals.
As of May 2026, services are still free for clients, but we will be moving towards a low fee model.
How long will sessions take?
A typical therapy session takes about 60 minutes. The total number of sessions depends on individual needs. Punctuality is crucial as rooms are limited and sudden session extensions are not possible.
The first session will typically be an intake session that is 90 minutes long, while the subsequent sessions average around 60 minutes.
Assessment sessions may take approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on individual needs.
Where will sessions take place?
Our sessions are typically in-person and take place in the Fledge Centre at Monash University Malaysia, Building 2, Level 7 (walk towards the left after exiting the lift. We also offer online telehealth sessions with trainee clinical psychologists.
Can I choose my therapist?
You can indicate your preferences in the sign-up sheet and we will do our best to match a best fit according to your needs. It is not a guarantee that you will get your preferred therapist.
Please note your specific needs or requests on the sign-up sheet.
How do sessions end?
This will be discussed with your counsellor/ psychologist depending on your needs. Both you and the counsellor/ psychologist have the right to terminate the session at any point in time.
Suitability of services
Who should go for these services by trainees?
Our services by trainees are ideal for individuals seeking affordable, professional mental health support or psychological assessments.
Can non-Monash Malaysia students/ alumni request for counselling/ psychological services?
Yes, anyone can sign up.
I would like counselling for my relationship with another person. Can I apply for Fledge services?
Yes, you are welcome to apply and talk to your counsellor about your relationship issues. They are trained to help you work through your problems. However, you may need to seek services elsewhere if you are seeking couples counselling together with your partner.
How do I know if counselling is working for me?
Every therapeutic relationship is unique to you and your counsellor/psychologist. It is crucial that you find your practicum counsellor/psychologist to be emphatic and understanding towards your problem situations. If the therapy sessions are noticeably making you feel more confused and lost, you are very welcome to express feedback towards your trainee regarding your needs in counselling.
Under any circumstances you feel the sessions are not beneficial, you are welcome to voice your discomforts in sessions and end the sessions. If necessary, request a different practicum counsellor/psychologist through the website.
Privacy, confidentiality and concerns
Are the trainees qualified?
All trainees are undergoing postgraduate practice to be a qualified practitioner. They practice under strict supervision from our board of qualified and licensed senior clinical supervisors.
Why are the sessions recorded?
As the trainee counsellors/ psychologists are still in training, audio and video recording are necessary to protect you and ensure the students deliver quality services. Trainees also review the recording with their supervisors for their learning and development. The recordings will be locked and kept confidential, and will typically be deleted upon completion of the training process.
Does anyone know I am attending counselling?
Your privacy and confidentiality are of the utmost importance. The trainee counsellors and clinical psychologists only discuss your case with their assigned clinical supervisors and no information will be shared and discussed outside the session. Only the supervisors and the assigned therapists would know of your engagement with our services. However, confidentiality may not apply in certain risky or dangerous circumstances (where if an individual is at immediate harm of themselves or others). More information will be provided, during your first session with the assigned practicum counsellor/ psychologist. You may ask for the identity of the clinicians' supervisors.
I want to sign up for sessions but I know a student/staff member in the program.
When you sign up/ fill out the intake form or speak with the clinic coordinator, explicitly state that you know a student or staff member there. Our clinic coordination team will do our best to coordinate from there by avoiding any forms of conflicts of interest.
Whom should I approach if I have a conflict with my practicum counsellor/psychologist?
Please reach out to us email at Fledge@monash.edu. You can choose to be reassigned to another counsellor/ psychologist trainee.
