At Monash, we welcome students from around the world each semester. We hope that you come study with us and experience all that Monash has to offer, both in and beyond the classroom.
If you’re planning on studying at Monash for a semester program (one or two semesters), you will be considered as either a Study Abroad student or an Exchange student, depending on whether your home institution is a Monash University exchange partner.
While Study Abroad and Exchange students both come from institutions overseas, attend our Monash Abroad orientation and study units at Monash, there are some key differences that we will clarify below. We also recommend you seek advice from your home institution about whether Study Abroad or Exchange is the most suitable option for you.
Study Abroad
Study Abroad will be your program option if there is no reciprocal exchange agreement between your home institution and Monash. As a Study Abroad student, tuition fees are paid to Monash by you directly or on your behalf by your home institution or a third party provider. This program is sometimes known as 'Direct-Enrol' or 'Free-Mover'.
In some cases, Study Abroad may be recommended by your home institution even if they do have a reciprocal exchange agreement with Monash. For example, there could be an uneven balance of students participating in the exchange program, so Study Abroad may be the most suitable option for you.
Not from a partner university?
If your university is not a Monash Abroad partner but you are still interested in experiencing studying in South East Asia, the fee-paying Study Abroad program is for you.

How does it work?
If you are a Study Abroad student, you will:
- apply for Study Abroad at Monash through your home university if they have a study abroad agreement with us, via a study abroad agent or directly to Monash
- meet the eligibility requirements for your chosen program
- enrol full-time (18-24 credit points) at a Monash Australia campus
- pay tuition fees to Monash or your Study Abroad partner/agent for the subjects you study
- be guaranteed on-campus accommodation if you wish to live on campus, or receive help finding accommodation if you require it
- have the choice to study one or more of our signature options for Study Abroad students, provided eligibility requirements are met
Whether you’re an Exchange student or a Study Abroad student, you can engage with the many support services available at Monash while you're with us, and you will receive an electronic Monash academic transcript with your grades upon completion of your time abroad at Monash via My eQuals.
What can I study?
You must be enrolled in a full-time load of on-campus units of minimum 18 and maximum 24 credit points. 1 Monash unit may have 6 or 12 credit points. You may select units to study from the Unit Handbook.
Steps :
- Use the “Advanced Search” tool to set your preferred filters
- Click on “Units”
- In the left-hand menu, select “Location” and tick “Malaysia”
- In the same left-hand menu, select “Implementation Year” and tick the year you wish to study in
- In the same left-hand menu, select “Level” and tick whether Undergraduate or Postgraduate, depending on the level you are looking for
- In the same left-hand menu, select “Teaching Period” and tick "First Semester" or "Second Semester", depending on which Monash semester you wish to study with us.
The unit must be indicated as Yes under “Open to exchange or study abroad students?” in order for you to be able to enrol for the unit.
Things to remember:
● Avoid Capstone units
● If you are an undergraduate student, choose Level 1,2, or 3 units. This is indicated in the unit code. For e.g. MKW 1002 is a Level 1 unit, indicated by the first digit. You should not choose units that are Level 5 and above.
● If you are a postgraduate student, you may choose Level 5 units and above.
You can refer to our Monash terminology webpage for an explanation on the terms used in the catalogue. You will need to choose 6 to 8 units per semester of study of exchange/study abroad for your study plan. This will allow you to have some back-ups and alternatives should any of your original choices become unavailable to you (e.g units not approved, unit discontinuations, classes reached students' quotas, etc).
How much will it cost?
Tuition fees are paid to Monash by you directly or on your behalf by your home institution or a third party provider.
Things like accommodation (whether you decide to live on or off-campus), living costs, travel and entertainment costs aren't included in your fees, so you should budget for these items like you would at home. You'll also need to factor in the cost of compulsory insurance and student visas.
You may be eligible for a scholarship from your home university or government, and many externally funded bodies also offer scholarships for students to study overseas. You should ask your global program coordinators about what's available to you before you leave home.
Ready to apply?
If you are applying as a Study Abroad student, you can apply to Monash directly with the Monash Abroad office, through a study abroad partner university, or with a study abroad agent.
To find out more about your eligibility, key dates, and preparing your application to Monash Abroad, visit our how to apply page here.
Exchange
Exchange will be your program option if your home institution has a reciprocal exchange agreement with Monash. You’ll need to be nominated by your home institution, and as an Exchange student you’ll continue to pay tuition fees to your home institution.
How does it work?
If you are an Exchange student, you will:
- apply for an Exchange at Monash through your home university
- meet the eligibility requirements for your chosen program
- enrol full-time (18-24 credit points) at a Monash campus
- continue paying your normal tuition fees to your home university, and pay no tuition fees to Monash
- receive help finding accommodation, if you require it

Ready to apply?
Because your home university has an exchange agreement with us, you need to apply through them. Talk to your exchange program coordinators to find out what you need to do to make Monash your first preference.
my.application is the online portal where students can digitally apply for an exchange place at Monash University at our Australian and Malaysian campuses.
All exchange students must be nominated by their home institution’s exchange office before we can accept their application.
To nominate you for a study place at Monash University for one or two semesters, your home institution begins an application on your behalf. This acts as the nomination. When they release the application to you, you will receive an email with further details for accessing the my.application portal and submitting your application.
