Wireless Network

The Monash wireless network is part of a multi‐university network known as eduroam.

Widely available in most university campuses across Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand, eduroam is also used in the US, Canada, Europe and parts of the Asia-Pacific. Once you're set up with eduroam, you'll be able to connect at all participating universities without having to reconfigure your device.

The eduroam wireless network is available to all staff and students, as well as our guests from participating institutions.

If you are previously connected to Monash-Malaysia, forget this network before proceeding. Failing to do so, may cause unstable Internet connection when your device switches between networks.

How to connect to eduroam

If you were previously connected to eduroam, you'll need to select it in your wi-fi settings and choose Forget network before following the steps below.

  1. From your Wi-Fi settings, select the network name eduroam
  2. Enter your Monash email address as your username
  3. Enter your Monash account password and connect.
  4. If you’re asked for:
  • Staff example: <email> @monash.edu
  • Student example: <email> @student.monash.edu
  • EAP method (if prompted): PEAP
  • Phase 2 authentication (if prompted): MSCHAPv2
  • CA certificate: Trust on first use (TOFU)
  • Anonymous identity: Must enter Monash email address

On-campus

Monash Malaysia laptop devices will automatically connect to a dedicated 'Monash-Asset' Wi-Fi channel (SSID), which will not require authentication via the Wi-Fi landing page. This service is available at all Malaysia campuses, including Clinical School Johor Bharu and Segamat/SEACO, and it offers the same network connectivity experience from the wired to the wireless environment when using Monash Malaysia laptop devices . It allows for staff to work from anywhere within the campus.

However, personal mobile computing devices will continue to connect into eduroam Wi-Fi channel (SSID). Important note, please ensure to disconnect from any private VPN before connecting to eduroam.

Campus Events

‘Monash-Events’ Wi-Fi channel (SSID) is available to visitors during events. This service is available at all Malaysia campuses, including Clinical School Johor Bahru and Segamat/SEACO. Login credentials, consisting of a “Username” and “Password”, are required to connect to the ‘Monash-Events’ network. Event organisers can request for login credentials via MUM IT Service Request Portal.

Work from Home Tips

The COVID-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order (MCO) have changed the dynamics of our daily routines. The demand for fast internet has surged exponentially as most people will be at home coping with learning and working. Here are some recommendations and tips on working or learning via your home internet connection. Your Device

Internet Connection

  • It is recommended to use the latest type of wireless router (AC wireless router). It provides two types of wireless connection
  • It is best to use wired connection. Connect your notebook using internet cables to the router.
  • Minimize or refrain from using any streaming TV/video services (ie Netflix, HyppTv, Android TV, Apple TV) from any devices (mobile devices, android box, TV) while you are working/learning. Most of your internet connection bandwidth will be consumed as streaming service uses very high bandwidth.
  • Number of devices connected to your home internet will also influence your connection speed to the internet. Given that you have a definite number of internet speeds based on the internet package that you’ve subscribed to, the lesser the number of devices connected, the better your internet connection would be.
  • 5 GHz band (recommended)
  • 2.4 Ghz band
  • Best use if you are sitting near to the router (the device at your home that have antennas)
  • More available channels, so less radio wave interference with neighbor’s routers
  • Best use if you are sitting further from the router
  • Limited number of channels, prone to radio wave interference, may work slower.

Security

  • Ensure your device is protected with an antivirus software. It is important that your antivirus is updated regularly.
  • Update your Windows/MacOS/Linux regularly.

Self Service Password Reset

  • Monash IT Account - Register yourself to the Self Service Password Reset. The service will reset and send you the new password via mobile phone immediately. This is useful when you forget your password and eliminate the need to call ITS Service Desk. Complete the registration here.
  • Network Password Reset - click here for self reset.
