Play a significant role in almost every industry imaginable.
The Bachelor of Materials Engineering (Honours) at Monash University Malaysia prepares you to play a significant role in almost every industry imaginable. This materials engineering program combines materials science, engineering fundamentals, and professional engineering practice to enable you to design, analyse, and improve engineering materials for modern applications.
Materials engineers make a unique contribution – not just by creating new materials, but also by improving what we already have. They make things stronger, lighter, and more functional, yet sustainable and cost-effective.
Their contributions underpin all aspects of engineering, manufacturing, and health sciences, whether it’s creating a lighter and stronger jet engine, a biodegradable tissue scaffold to grow organs from stem cells, or new types of solar cells and batteries.
Why Study Bachelor of Materials Engineering (Honours)?
The Bachelor of Materials Engineering (Honours) is an interdisciplinary engineering degree built on physics, chemistry, mathematics, and natural sciences. The program emphasises how the internal structure of materials determines their properties, performance, and suitability for real-world engineering applications.
Materials engineers are increasingly in demand for their expertise in:
- the emerging fields of nanotechnology, biomedical materials, electronic materials, recycling and energy generation
- the development of lightweight metal alloys
- the use of materials for energy systems such as batteries and fuel cells
- functional materials made at the nanoscale, including the wonder-material ‘graphene’
- traditional industries such as metallurgy and mining
- failure analysis.
Materials engineers work closely with materials scientists, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers in multidisciplinary environments, applying engineering knowledge to societal and environmental contexts.

Credit transfer
Applications for credit can include credit transfer for previous study or recognition of prior learning.
Part A. Engineering fundamentals and breadth study
This will develop your understanding of natural and physical sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines.
Part B. Engineering design
This will develop the engineering techniques, tools and resources for the conduct, design and management of engineering design processes and projects, both in the industrial setting and in the development of research experiments.
Part C. Engineering knowledge and application
This will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific engineering methods of a branch of engineering and will integrate the specific engineering methods and discipline knowledge into practice. You will develop skills to identify and apply knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. Additionally, your studies will focus on your understanding and application of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in your discipline.
Part D. Professional practice
This will develop your skills in readiness for the engineering workplace. You will develop skills in effective team membership and team leadership, the use and management of commercially relevant data, and the legal responsibilities of engineers. This study will integrate the theme 'Engineering knowledge and application' with your specialist field of engineering.
Part E. Elective study
This will enable you to further deepen your knowledge of engineering or broaden your knowledge in another approved field. If you are completing a single degree course, you will have electives to add technical expertise in your engineering specialisation and/or complete a minor in an engineering discipline that complements your specialisation, thereby adding other skills to your repertoire.

Quality education
Monash University is ranked #33 in the world for material sciences (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026) and rated Tier 5 (Excellent) in D-Setara Engineering by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
Professional recognition
Your degree will be accredited by Engineers Australia when you complete your studies at Monash University, Australia.
The common first year
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has a common first year, allowing you to experience a range of disciplines before deciding on a specialisation. You'll develop your foundational skills for engineering before deciding which of the seven specialisations to pursue in your second year.
Get ahead
Monash is one of only a few universities in Malaysia offering a degree in materials engineering, and you’ll study with some of the world’s best materials scientists and engineers.
Thriving job market
Malaysia is home to established industries in rubber, metal processing and steel. Materials engineers are highly sought-after with major industry players offering stable employment. Emerging industries such as semiconductor and electronics, and electric and hydrogen vehicles are also growing rapidly if you're looking for an exciting career focused on innovation.
Work overseas
Materials engineering is key to improving the design of final products across industries around the world. You’ll be able to find work or do research in many countries. Malaysia and Australia are signatories of the Washington Accord, which means that our graduates can work in any other signatory country without the need to requalify.
Join an engineering student club
Our student-run clubs let you learn new skills and engage with industry to broaden your networks. You’ll get hands on with real-world projects and competitions as you work in multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative products or drive positive change.
Volunteer with Engineers Without Borders
The Monash University Malaysia student chapter is involved in a wide range of projects benefiting local communities. Our students have helped to install a micro hydro generator for a school in Budok Aru, constructed a workshop for a shelter home, renovated refugee schools, and more.
