Dr Azliyana Azahari

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Malaysia School of Arts & Social Sciences

Azliyana is the first Postdoctoral Research Fellow in climate change communication for the Hub’s Malaysia node. With her expertise in climate-related atmospheric hazards and emission management, she has been instrumental in developing sustainable management policies.

Azliyana’s background is in environmental science and management and she holds a Masters of Technology Management. In 2018, Azliyana earned her PhD in Environment and Development from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, where she conducted research on the relationship between the composition of major air pollutants and road traffic volume in an industrial environment using an atmospheric pollution dispersion model.

As a passionate advocate for building resilient communities, Azliyana's current research is centred on communicating the impacts of climate change and promoting the importance of climate action. She is responsible for studying and analysing how information about climate change is communicated to the public, and developing effective strategies for communicating climate change science and solutions to diverse audiences.

Prior to joining the MCCCRH Malaysia node, Azliyana held a postdoctoral position in atmospheric management, where she identified a gap in climate science research and actively worked to address this issue.

Dr Ooi Wee Liam

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Malaysia School of Arts & Social Sciences

Wee Liam is currently working as a Lecturer in Environmental Humanities and Social Sciences at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, under the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (Malaysia Node). His research focuses on conceptualisations of human–nature relationships and how these inform pro-environmental motivations and behaviours. He is currently expanding his work to include community-informed research using participatory action and co-design approaches with vulnerable communities affected by climate change.

Previously, he worked with the Malaysian node to produce a policy report for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, aimed at improving planetary health awareness and fostering sustainable behavioural change among Malaysians. He is also a volunteer with Climate Governance Malaysia, where he supports research-related activities and contributes to the preparation of summarised reports.

At present, Wee Liam is involved in collaborative research with various institutions to investigate how climate disasters (e.g., floods, heatwaves) affect the psychosocial well-being of vulnerable communities.

Savyna Selvarajan

Research Assistant

Malaysia School of Arts & Social Sciences

Part of the WHO project.

Savyna has an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Nottingham Malaysia 2025. Her work is grounded in discourse analysis and applies an intersectional lens, as observed in her MA thesis on newspaper representations on Sri Lankan Tamils in the UK newspapers during and post the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Savyna leverages her past research in marginalised peoples and the intersectional struggles that they face to understand the climate change impacts within these communities. Her current research reflects this, as it centres on how climate change affects women's health in Malaysia and Indonesia.
