Industrial training

Course code : ENG0002

Course title : Industrial Training

The Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) requires students to undergo the industrial training BEFORE they complete their academic studies. Students must complete 12 weeks of industrial training to be eligible to graduate. Students at the Malaysia campus must undertake their industrial training in an industry based environment. As such, Malaysia campus students undertaking research work in the university environment cannot be considered as having met the requirements of the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council. This also applies to Malaysia campus students undertaking their inter-campus exchange at Clayton campus.

The duration of the industrial training is 12 weeks of continuous training with minimum 120 credit points. Students are NOT allowed to do partially as previous years.

Industry Based Learning (IBL) for Software Engineering students

  • A Monash IBL placement is a unique opportunity for undergraduate Engineering students to apply key concepts from class in a practical, corporate setting and develop sought-after employability skills.
  • Students on placement participate full time in a defined, graduate level role during a 22-week placement period at established partners of the School of Engineering & IT industry based learning program.
  • To be eligible to complete an IBL placement, student must:

This unit is available to students enrolled in the Software Engineering specialisation of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Malaysia campus who have been accepted into the industry-based learning placement program with at least 48 credit points of study accumulated for units offered by Faculty of Information Technology.

Prerequisite unit: FIT1008; have passed every unit with a 65% average across all units

Students Progression

1. Special Consideration

A student whose work during a semester or whose performance in an examination or other assessment has been adversely affected by acute illness or other exceptional cause beyond their control may apply for special consideration. This will be taken into account by the board of examiners when determining the student's results for the units affected.

For further information refer to University Policy and Procedures for Special Consideration at:

http://monash.edu/exams/special-consideration.html

2. Intermission

Intermission is available to students who wish to apply to take a period of leave from their studies. If you are experiencing difficulties with your studies or you wish to take time off from study for any reason, you can apply for Intermission (leave of absence) for up to a maximum of one academic year at any one time. When granting leave the Faculty retains the students place in their course.

Students should be aware that a period of Intermission is included in the calculation of time limits for completion of an engineering degree, and that special requirements may apply to international students due to student visa regulations.

If you do not re-enrol when required during your intermission period, your enrolment will be considered to have lapsed and you will no longer be a student at Monash University.

Do not confuse intermission with ‘total withdrawal’ of units or ‘discontinuation’ from a course, which means no further enrolment. Failure to do so will result in you being discontinued from your course.

3. Course Discontinuation

If you are planning to discontinue your study, you may wish to discuss with staff of your school course management office or your lecturers. You may wish to consider applying for intermission as an alternative. Should you decide to proceed with course discontinuation, you should be aware of the strict deadlines which apply with regards to discontinuing units and courses and the financial and academic penalties that will be applied.

You can discontinue your course by applying via the Student eForms

4. Examinations

Students must ensure that they are available to attend exams for the entire examination period and should not commit to travel or other events during this time period as special consideration will not apply. Examinations are usually held after a period of 12 weeks after semester commences (not inclusive of mid-semester break or SWOT VAC). A period of SWOT VAC or ‘study break’ precedes each examination period.

Other methods of assessment which may be used in addition to end-of-semester examinations will be explained by the lecturers in their introductory lectures. The final semester result is usually an aggregate of marks obtained in tests, assignments, laboratory reports and the end-of-semester examination. The weighting associated with each component will be explained at the start of teaching and also within the unit guide on Moodle.
