Global study tours are short (usually 1-4 weeks) group coursework experiences that allow you to complete a Monash University unit overseas. These programs are bespoke academic experiences built around a specific study area and delivered experientially in another country or countries.
Global Study Tours are generally led by a Monash academic and will allow you to travel and study alongside a small group of fellow Monash students in a new context.
The best part about global study tours is that Monash does the hard work for you.
The leading academics plan and run the programs so you don’t need to worry about finding your own accommodation or in-country logistics. You just need to show up, ready to learn!
How do they work?
Global study tours allow you to study either a core or elective unit overseas through field-based experiences. Programs range in length but are typically 1-4 weeks, and usually run during semester breaks.
All in-country activities will be arranged by the leading faculty. Depending on the tour, you may need to source your own flights, but many Global Study Tours will offer group flight options. You will be responsible for arranging an entry visa (if applicable) to the destination country or countries.
For many Global Study Tours, you will be required to complete in-country assessments, these may include group presentations, reflections or quizzes. These will be built into the program schedule and you will have access to the academic for support and guidance throughout the program.
How much will it cost?
Global Study Tour costs will comprise a tuition fee and a program fee. The tuition fee will cover the unit costs and the program fee will cover in-country activities. Each Global Study Tour program listing will provide a detailed list of what is included and excluded in the program fees. Examples of what is included in program fees are things like accommodation, transport, in-country activities, entrance fees, meals, etc.
How can I find out more and apply?
Global Study Tours are published each year in the Handbook and on the Monash Abroad program search.
Key timelines to be mindful of are:
| Travel period | Promotion and recruitment timeframe |
|---|---|
| Winter (June to July) | Faculties will usually promote winter programs at the end of the previous calendar year and recruit early in Semester 1. |
| Summer A & B (Nov - Feb) | Faculties will usually promote and recruit for Summer programs in June-August of each year. |
Eligibility and selection
Each tour will have specific eligibility criteria, which will be outlined on the ‘How to Apply’ tab of each program listing on the Monash Abroad Program Search, alongside any supporting details or documents the Faculty requires of applicants. Examples of this may include the submission of a personal statement, portfolio of previous work or pitch videos.
Student shortlisting and selection for Global Study Tours is undertaken by the leading Faculty. Be sure to read the application instructions carefully to ensure you are addressing the application requirements.
Global Study Tour units are open to both domestic and international students.
What happens after I apply?
Once you have applied and the application deadline has passed, the Faculty will undertake assessments of all applicants. Some Global Study Tours receive a high number of applications, so this process can take some time. You can expect to hear the outcome of your application between 2-4 weeks after the application deadline. This will be sent to your Monash student email, so be sure to keep a close eye on your inbox!
If you are selected to participate in a Global Study Tour you will need to complete several requirements to commit to the program and to receive final travel approval from Monash Abroad. All of these requirements will be emailed to you by Monash Abroad once the outcome of your application is confirmed.
