KPT/JPT (R3/0530/6/0005) 10/30 - MQA/SWA0129

Shape the world's future.

The world is facing a range of increasingly complex and pressing challenges – food security, climate change, overpopulation, habitat and biodiversity loss, and an ever-changing technological, economic and social landscape.

Our future depends on bright minds, innovators and collaborators who can create solutions for a better tomorrow. This is where science comes in. Science is about understanding how the world works. It’s about analysing, experimenting and making discoveries. It’s about driving change.

With a science degree from Monash, the possibilities to make a real difference are endless.

Credit transfer Applications for credit can include credit transfer for previous study or recognition of prior learning.

Applied microbiology* Explore microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses, and their application in improving health in areas related to industrial processes, agriculture, medicine, genetic engineering, food and bioremediation. You can prevent food spoilage, stop the spread of infectious diseases, or solve environmental problems by removing pollutants using beneficial microbes.

Biotechnology Understand and utilise various biological systems and/or living organisms to develop new technologies and processes of value to the healthcare industry, agricultural and industrial sectors, and the environment.

Food science and business Develop a broad view from food production to business, bridging the gap in delivering nutritious, safe, affordable, and sustainable food products to the global market. Choose from three streams: strategic marketing, management, or digital marketing.

Genomics and bioinformatics Decipher the total genetic makeup of organisms and the diverse range of analytical methods and tools applied to genomic data. These allied fields contribute to superior healthcare, enhanced food security and more.

Medicinal chemistry Design, develop, and determine the biological activities and properties of drugs. You’ll learn how to seek new active chemical compounds from natural products such as rainforest plants, and design novel synthetic compounds.

Psychology* Study the human mind, mental processes and resulting behaviour. This is a broad scientific discipline that includes investigations of the brain, memory, perception, reasoning, and mental health and wellbeing.

Tropical environmental biology* Study the behaviour of living systems with a strong focus on ecological and environmental issues of global importance such as climate change, biodiversity, sustainability and conservation. You acquire greater awareness of our living earth and help mitigate climate change issues.

Chemistry (minor) Explore the science of matter and energy, how atoms and molecules react and interact, and how that behaviour can be harnessed to transform materials, medicine and technology.

Genetics and genomics (minor) Study the structure, function, transmission and evolution of genes. Genetics underpins many exciting areas such as biomedical science, conservation biology and forensics.

* Available as a minor.

Top 100 in the world Your degree will be recognised wherever you want to work or study in the world. Monash University is ranked (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026):

  • No. 26 for Life Sciences and Medicine
  • No. 41 for Anatomy and Physiology
  • No. 47 in the world for Chemistry
  • No. 52 in the world for Environmental Sciences
  • No. 56 for Biological Sciences
  • No. 58 for Natural Sciences.

International standards Our science courses have a strong regional focus with a global perspective. Many of our units are identical to those offered at the Clayton campus and are in disciplines where there is a demand for quality graduates in Malaysia and beyond.

Practical experience Build your professional experience with an internship in the science industry. We have worked with multinational companies across the country and region throughout the years to place our students.

Excellent learning environment You’ll develop academically and personally in a dynamic and stimulating environment, and have access to brilliant minds and exceptional facilities. 100% of our academic staff in Science hold a PhD or MBBS/PhD degree.

Enhanced flexibility Explore your interests with a broad science education in your first year before you specialise in one or more areas that inspires you in your second year. You can choose to focus on a single major, or pursue a double major and still complete your degree within three years.

Exciting specialisations We offer specialisations ranging from cutting-edge theoretical and applied science to new interdisciplinary fields – all taught by academics who are leaders in their scientific disciplines.

Transferable skills Gain a firm foundation in generic skills like quantitative literacy, data analysis, information literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, communication and presentation skills, and the capacity to work in teams.

Nurture other interests Pursue non-science units at different schools, like journalism or management, to form a study plan that suits your individual needs and career aspirations.

Science graduates have diverse and interesting careers, but not all science graduates become scientists. You can use your degree as a springboard to any career where critical thinking, the ability to analyse and investigate new information, a commitment to lifelong learning and evidence-based decision making are valued.

Bachelor of Science graduates have established careers in areas such as:

  • clinical trials
  • intellectual property management
  • biomedical product industry
  • drug discovery and development
  • water management
  • biodiversity and conservation
  • environmental management
  • analytical/biomedical chemistry
  • biotechnology
  • quality assurance and control
  • science journalism
  • process control
  • microbiology
  • project management and consultancy
  • natural products research
  • scientific and regulatory affairs
  • climate change advocacy.

To enter Monash University, students must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements.

Prerequisites

The formal prerequisites for Bachelor of Science are at least one of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, Physics, Psychology or Mathematics at a higher level (Australian Year 12 equivalent).

Meeting the Monash course prerequisites are also subject to the 5 year rule.

Courses with maths and science prerequisite subjects

If the course you are applying for requires maths and/or science as prerequisite subjects, you can meet the requirements in the following ways:

  • Australian Year 12 or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme: You must meet the maths and/or science prerequisite subject required for your chosen course as specified above.
  • Other qualifications recognised by Monash: If you have completed maths and/or science subjects in the relevant discipline at the required grade level, it is assumed that you have knowledge equivalent to the Australian Year 12 (VCE equivalent) prerequisite subject required for your chosen course. It is strongly recommended that you check that you have covered the assumed knowledge required for your course by completing the Assumed Knowledge Skills Analysis. This online activity includes multiple-choice questions based on your prior studies and helps you identify areas for revision, so you can start your course feeling confident and prepared. Once you accept your Monash offer and set up your student account you can complete the Assumed Knowledge Skills Analysis before starting your course.

These guidelines do not apply to the Bachelor of Medical Science or Doctor of Medicine.

"I knew early on during my undergrad days that I wanted to do a PhD so that I could become a scientist. I studied hard and I am fortunate that I met my mentor at Monash – Dr Ton So Ha. She provided me with abundant guidance and support, and together with Monash's research infrastructure, it helped me to set a strong foundation for my scientific skills."
