About our consultations

What we doWhat we don't do
Help you with study-related issues (e.g. time management, planning assessments, exam revision, critical thinking).Proofreading or editing
Support academic writing and EnglishProvide feedback on resumes or cover letters
Share useful strategies that you can apply to your studiesHelp with preparation for English tests such as IELTS, TOEFL and PTE
Refer you to useful resources and workshopsAssist with numeracy or mathematics queries
Provide initial feedback on sections of your academic writingAssess your work or provide assistance on timed assessments

During a consultation, your adviser will ask you about any specific study-related issues you’re experiencing. They’ll share useful strategies that you can apply to your studies, or refer you to resources and workshops that will help.

Advisers may also be able to provide you with initial feedback on your draft assessment response. They may suggest a further consultation or you can request another one.

Bring what’s needed to help your adviser get a good picture of the study issue you’re facing. If you want to discuss an assessment, bring the draft you’re working on and any associated assessment guidelines or marking rubrics.

Drafts are easier to revise than finished assessments, so bringing a draft means we can provide you with much more help.

Be ready to share the assessment question and your unit Moodle page.

Before your consultation, you can take a look at our resources on Learn HQ, which provide you with lots of information on common things students ask us about.

After your consultation, think about:

  • what you discussed
  • what specific actions were suggested
  • what steps can you take in response to the advice you received
  • whether you need to book another session and what you should do to prepare for it.

Check your Monash email account for a follow up email from your adviser. This may contain a summary of the discussion you had, useful resources and links to make appointments in the future.

What our students say

Build my confidence

"Thanks to you I have learned it is okay to make a small constant effort every day and try to join the discussion (just speak a few words) and to tell my concerns. It will lead me to grow up and have confidence little by little."

Deal with pressure

"I still remember my first consultation with you. I almost cried at the time since I had lots of pressure. Now I have completed all my units for the semester. I still feel very lucky to have met you."

Learn from feedback

"This is by far the most detailed feedback I've received at Monash, and it is very helpful. I learned a lot from it. Also, thank you for seeing something in me and encouraging me to be better. Your support means a lot to me."
