In this unit, you will be introduced to important principles for undertaking research in the field of Data Science. The skills developed and knowledge acquired from this unit will prepare you to conduct and communicate your own research, as well as to be knowledgeable and critical interpreters of research more generally. You will be introduced to the principles of research design, research ethics, and research methods and techniques of data collection and analysis appropriate to Data Science research generally. These skills will then be applied to the development, and written and oral communication of a research proposal.

Learning outcomes
- Review and critique research literature and findings from a wide range of sources in data science;
- Communicate research findings orally and in writing;
- Explain the technical, ethical and professional issues that may arise in data science research and demonstrate them in practice;
- Evaluate, select and justify research methods and techniques appropriate to particular projects in data science;
- Integrate research skills into effective team and project work;
- Develop a research project and produce a proposal explaining the project and its design.
Workload
The weekly workload requirements will be: • Two hours of attendance at weekly workshops. • Approximately 10 hours per week of independent study.
