This unit examines key histories, theories, and frameworks of contemporary art, introducing students to a range of prominent contemporary artists, historians, curators, and theorists. The unit aims to equip students undertaking an honours year – in either art history, fine art or curatorial practice – with an enriched understanding of the art-historical context in which they are working. It also introduces students to advanced research methodologies for writing about contemporary art.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate awareness of current discourses in a range of disciplines that bear on the production, exhibition, and interpretation of contemporary art;
- Distinguish between different frameworks and methods for analysing artworks and exhibitions (i.e., queer, feminist, decolonial, Marxist, etc.;
- Undertake detailed, original, and imaginative analyses and interpretations of artworks and exhibitions;
- Undertake advanced and original research on artworks, exhibitions, and relevant art history and theory.
