Overview

This unit examines how Australia shapes and conducts its relationships with the world, and engages with advanced conceptual approaches to understanding foreign policy. You will explore the evolution of Australia’s external relations, key strategic partnerships, and the institutions that influence decision-making. You will also analyse Australia’s strategic alliances and its engagement with the Indo-Pacific region. Through case studies and real-world examples, you will evaluate how domestic politics, economic interests, and strategic considerations shape Australia’s role in international affairs.

Learning outcomes

  1. critically engage in key debates framing Australian foreign policy;
  2. explain the development and implementation of Australian foreign policy, and how this is affected by real and perceived regional and global contexts;
  3. identify and explain individual, institutional, structural and normative considerations associated with foreign policy development and implementation;
  4. produce innovative solutions to problems through critical reflection and policy modelling;
  5. apply research skills to a range of challenges;
  6. communicate ideas perceptively and effectively to a variety of audiences.

Workload
