This unit examines key ethical issues arising in biomedical research. It covers topics such as the history of controversial research, "therapeutic misconception", informed consent, acceptable and unacceptable risks to research participants, research involving "vulnerable" populations, and research in developing countries. Throughout the unit use will be made of case studies, ethical frameworks and principles--and participants will have ample opportunity to discuss their own experiences with human research ethics.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and critically evaluate key ethical concepts and principles used to address issues in research involving humans;
- Use ethical principles and reasoning to arrive at well-argued conclusions about ethical dilemmas in biomedical research;
- Critically engage with the research ethics literature;
- Construct arguments for novel conclusions in relation to that literature.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
