APG5127 · Advanced methodologies in the humanities and social sciences

Overview

In this unit you will undertake advanced training in identifying, understanding and selecting appropriate research designs and methods to meet the needs of your research project in the humanities and social sciences, and as a student enrolled in the Master of Arts Research Training. You will explore, in an interdisciplinary setting, a range of different research designs and methods that operate within and across a variety of humanities and social science disciplines. You will examine the fundamentals of research design and investigate a variety of research methods (qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods etc.) that will assist you in advancing and refining your research proposal.

Learning outcomes

1. identify and evaluate the appropriateness of different methodologies for research in the humanities and social sciences;
2. apply critical thinking to theoretical and practical problems for research in the humanities and social sciences, and clearly synthesise and analyse key elements of those problems in writing;
3. design a compelling research proposal that demonstrates expertise in a body of methods suitable to your project in the humanities and social sciences;
4. apply sophisticated communication and research skills essential for success in a Master’s of Research Training degree.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
