Overview

In this unit, you will focus on the social structures that support key patterns of gendered violence. You will examine how broad based gender inequality underpins and shapes patterns of family violence in Australia and globally. You will explore the link between challenging gender inequality and the prevention of family violence. You will identify one specific aspect or type of family violence for sustained investigation. Focused on this area, you will undertake a targeted review of the relevant academic literature and create a policy brief designed to inform an agency or organisation about this aspect or type of family violence. The development of the policy brief will be scaffolded and supported by the Unit Coordinator .

Learning outcomes

1. critically evaluate the social structures that support key patterns of gendered violence;
2. interrogate how broad-based gender inequality underpins and shapes patterns of family violence in Australia and globally;
3. discuss and critically analyse the implications of challenging gender inequality for the prevention of family violence;
4. critically apply unit concepts and relevant research literature to an aspect or type of family violence that you have identified and defined;
5. develop and present a policy brief for an agency or organisation in both written and oral forms.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
