Overview

In this unit you will develop advanced knowledge and skills in the field of global communications at graduate level. You will analyse the principles and theories of the field in order to engage with a range of contemporary professional communications practices. Our particular focus is understanding the critical roles played by communications fields and industries across diverse sectors including politics, government, business and everyday society. You will further explore these roles in the context of the complexities posed by a world of digitalisation and globalisation.

Learning outcomes

1. identify and analyse core concepts and theories underpinning contemporary communications approaches;
2. critically analyse and appraise the relationship between theory and practice in the field of communications;
3. discuss and critically analyse the role of communications in contemporary global societies and its relationship with a range of different sectors from local to global levels;
4. read and critically analyse scholarly publications in communications.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week.
