Overview

This unit explores environmental systems as they relate to the performance of architectural design and construction. This includes application of environmental design principles to improve the performance and sustainability of the construction and operation of buildings at various scales. Analysis of environmental systems will be conducted with a focus on building performance as a means of addressing climate change and supporting sustainable development.

Learning outcomes

  1. These Learning Outcomes are mapped against the National Standard of Competency for Architects (NSCA) Performance Criteria (PC). On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
  2. Understand and describe advanced principles, key strategies and regulatory requirements for the sustainable environmental performance of buildings at various scales; (PC10, PC12)
  3. Apply, test, analyse and prioritise advanced principles and strategies of sustainable environmental design; (PC35, PC45)
  4. Combine environmental performance strategies, technologies and systems to develop concept designs for ‘regenerative’ small-scale buildings; (PC35)
  5. Learn to collaborate and take responsibility for effective group work in response to a brief;
  6. Develop a critical awareness of the role of architects, and your agency in addressing contemporary sustainable development issues; (PC12)
  7. Extend knowledge through self-paced exercises, qualitative and quantitative analysis, digital and physical modelling, evaluation and feedback.
