Overview

You will undertake advanced studies in three selected topics in astrophysics and related fields. These extend your expertise in theoretical and computational astrophysics, data analysis and the skills required to effectively communicate your findings using contemporary communication tools. The topics are: • Radiation astrophysics • Order of magnitude astrophysics • Special topics in Contemporary astrophysics NB: Subject to approval by the Chief Examiner, one of the topics in ASP5021 may be replaced by a topic from PHS5021.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of advanced theoretical and computational astrophysics, and related disciplines.
  2. Demonstrate high-level skills in theoretical/computation astrophysics and/or experimental physics that are relevant to advanced contemporary astrophysics.
  3. Synthesize and interpret advanced knowledge in theoretical, computational and/or experimental physics that are essential for advanced astrophysics.
  4. Apply knowledge and critical thinking skills to the solution of complex problems in contemporary astrophysics.

Workload

A total of 24 hours per week • Three topics each with 3-hours of lectures/workshops/tutorials • Three topics each with 1-hour of consultation and online discussions involving peers and staff, and • 12 hours of independent study per week
