Overview

Artificial intelligence is already changing the way that we use all manner of digital media, from the way that we work to the way that we play. The role of artificial intelligence in decision-making systems from government to business mean that many of the impacts may remain invisible even as they affect our lives. In this unit you will gain an understanding of artificial intelligence from a social science perspective, the history and representation of artificial intelligence, inform practical ethics of AI use by exploring the opportunities and pitfalls it brings, and consider the parameters around effective use.

Learning outcomes

  1. analyse and investigate the social, philosophical, and infrastructural history of artificial intelligence;
  2. construct and implement a well-reasoned case for the use or non-use of AI in a professional or social context;
  3. develop and critique workflows for the use of AI to generate content in response to sensitive contexts;
  4. evaluate the use and ethical limits of AI.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is144 hours per teaching period typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
