Overview

In this unit, you will examine the communicative and cultural nature of digital technologies and explore the creative use of digital media communications to advance knowledge, enable democratic processes, and facilitate social change. You will apply new approaches and practices relating to the design of communication strategies for a range of social and cultural issues. You will also engage with relevant communication organisations and their leaders to provide real-world perspective on these challenges. Throughout the semester, you will build the skills and knowledge to design a relevant and effective communications campaign.

Learning outcomes

  1. analyse media, communications and social change theories and their impact on social, cultural and political challenges;
  2. critically evaluate the role and impact of digital media as a tool for social change;
  3. synthesise and integrate media, communications, and social change theory to address a specific systemic social/political/cultural challenge;
  4. design and deliver a social change campaign to address and potentially impact a specific systemic social/political/cultural challenge.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
