This unit seeks to equip you with an understanding of cultural policy, developing conceptual and analytical skills for its framing, contextualised in specific social, political and economic contexts and purposes. It theorises the origin, formulation, operation and impact of policies for culture and creativity in contemporary society. The unit focusses on global, national and local policies that have nurtured the cultural and creative industries, identifying objectives for and debates about the production of value - economic and social. It examines the impact of cultural policy on historical, existing and future practices by businesses, agencies, institutions and communities of interest

Learning outcomes
- Identify and critically evaluate conceptual, historical and contemporary issues involved in the formation of cultural policy at global, national and local level;
- Apply analytical skills and develop frameworks for cultural policy analysis to a range of issues challenges in specific social, political and economic contexts;
- Communicate effectively a breadth and depth of scholarly analysis applied to cultural policy issues in specific contexts and to a range of stakeholders.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
