Taking a cultural economy approach, this research-led unit seeks to equip you with conceptual and methodological tools for the analysis and understanding of the variety of functions of culture in contemporary society. The approach encompasses theory and methods drawn from political economy, sociological and cultural studies. It equips you with skills to identify, generate and contribute to debates about the practices surrounding culture, the conceptual, political and practical purposes it serves and the values it generates for a variety of interests and contexts. The unit is formulated to be responsive to live debates and directions of current work and issues in the field, exploring current scholarly agendas to nurture an inter-disciplinary research community through a workshop-based pedagogy.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and operationalise a research agenda for current issues and challenges in the cultural economy;
- Identify and deploy effectively a repertoire of methods for researching the cultural economy;
- Engage critically in scholarly debates about the nature and direction of the cultural economy at local, national and global level;
- Communicate effectively a breadth and depth of analysis applied to cultural economy issues, debates and research for a range of audiences.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
