Overview

This unit explores the origin, function and value of cultural events, institutional assets, exhibitions and festivals and their relationship with the creative industries and role on the cultural economy. Taking a theoretical and practical approach it develops a methodological repertoire for understanding the direct and indirect impact of policy on cultural events, assets, exhibitions and festivals, the role of cultural intermediaries and relationship with audiences and communities of interest in placemaking and the experience economy. The unit makes use of Monash’s Melbourne/Victoria location for engagement but will also allow for fieldwork iteration (e.g. on location in another city in Australia/Overseas).

Learning outcomes

1. Identify and articulate the scope and function of events, exhibition and festivals and their role in the cultural economy;
2. Critically evaluate the formulation, character, objectives and value of events, exhibitions and festivals and their role in the cultural economy - locally, nationally and globally;
3. Apply independent research skills to analysis of cultural events, exhibitions and festivals utilising a cultural economy framework and creative methods;
4. Communicate effectively a breadth and depth of analysis applied to evaluating the character, role and impact of cultural events, exhibitions and festivals.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
