In this unit you will develop knowledge, strategies and skills needed to interact in Japanese in practical contexts in Australia and Japan. You will extend linguistic, sociolinguistic and sociocultural knowledge to develop cross-cultural awareness and facilitate effective interaction.

Learning outcomes
- comprehend and write basic Japanese texts with hiragana, katakana and foundational kanji characters;
- compose short coherent texts about personal and familiar topics using appropriate digital tools and applying textbook grammar patterns and vocabulary;
- communicate effectively in simple Japanese conversations about familiar topics, applying textbook grammar patterns and vocabulary and growing awareness of appropriate cultural contexts;
- recognise and use approximately 150 kanji (90 new kanji);
- demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity through self-reflection, comparisons and collaborations deepening cross-cultural understanding of selected aspects of Japanese society within a global context.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
