This is the first part of a sequence in intermediate Japanese. In this unit you will develop your basic linguistic skills and socio-cultural knowledge in spoken and written Japanese at an intermediate level. You will consolidate your interactive competence, including linguistic, socio-linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge. You will enhance your intercultural skills and ability to conduct independent research.

Learning outcomes
- comprehend and write intermediate level Japanese texts on familiar topics including reading and writing with assistance of dictionaries and limited use of available technologies;
- demonstrate intermediate level proficiency in speaking and listening comprehension including unassisted independent conversations on everyday topics using a range of familiar expressions, sentence patterns and speech styles with awareness of cultural contexts;
- recognise and use approximately 240 kanji (90 new kanji);
- apply appropriate research skills in individual and collective explorations of Japanese culture and society using appropriate English and basic Japanese materials with assistance of available technologies.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
