Overview

This is the second part of a sequence in intermediate Japanese. In this unit you will enhance your knowledge about Japan and consolidate and further develop your interactive skills in spoken and written Japanese. You will develop your intercultural awareness and ability to conduct independent research.

Learning outcomes

  1. comprehend and write intermediate level Japanese texts on familiar topics and with increasingly complex expressions of politeness (keigo), includes reading and writing with assistance of dictionaries and limited use of available technologies;
  2. demonstrate intermediate level proficiency in speaking and listening comprehension including unassisted independent conversations on everyday topics using appropriate casual, formal and honorific expressions with sensitivity to appropriate cultural norms;
  3. recognise and use approximately 320 kanji (80 new kanji);
  4. apply appropriate research skills in individual and collective explorations of Japanese culture and society using appropriate English and basic Japanese materials with assistance of available technologies.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
