Overview

In this unit you will investigate the questions: What does theatre and performance do and how does theatre and performance help us understand and creatively engage our world? We will ask and answer these questions by exploring how theatre and performance practice in the arts (tools including such as performing, directing, writing and design) and performance theory (tools for understanding and creatively engaging) inform each other. You will explore key concepts such as ritual and myth, embodied knowing, performativity, liveness, affect and intersectionality and their application to performance practice. You will work together to apply your explorations in theory and practice to a range of contexts such as identity, community and culture, enterprise and economics, social relations, politics, and futures.

Learning outcomes

1. analyse the mutually informing relationship between theatre and performance theory and practice and apply it to the analysis and evaluation of a range of arts practice;
2. critically evaluate how contemporary theatre and performance practice and key concepts in theatre and performance studies help us understand and creatively engage our worlds;
3. demonstrate collaboration and teamwork skills;
4. create original performance work that applies explorations in theory and practice to a range of aesthetic, community, enterprise and political questions;
5. critically explain the development of a creative artefact, including creative choices and techniques and how they link to intercultural theories and concepts.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
