Overview

In this unit, you will explore concepts of gender and sexuality in Europe and Asia, using comparative methods. You will consider how these concepts have developed distinctly in each sphere, how colonisation and globalisation have influenced gender and sexuality, and how you can analyse these concepts in a comparative frame. In particular, you will engage with contemporary case studies and examples of complex developments in gender and sexuality discourses in select sites of Asia and Europe in order to critically evaluate their respective positions and perspectives, their areas of overlap and their specificities. You will examine how concepts of gender and sexuality intersect with the distinctive ideas of human rights and natural law in Asian and European conceptualisations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Compare and critically analyse how beliefs and practices about gender and sexuality have developed in Asia and Europe and how these express themselves in contemporary debates and discourses;
  2. Apply advanced comparative methodologies to evaluate and critique the processes by which gender and sexuality encapsulate conceptions of the East and West and how they contest traditional and modern ideas in the arena of human rights and natural law;
  3. Independently research and critically evaluate primary and secondary sources relevant to ideas of gender and sexuality in the East and West to support critical insights;
  4. Communicate effectively in written and oral formats, individually and in collaboration with peers.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
