Overview

This is the second part of a sequence in upper-intermediate Japanese. In this unit you will develop skills in both spoken language and contemporary written language and enhance your knowledge about Japanese modern and traditional culture. You will also consolidate your research skills and intercultural competence.

Learning outcomes

1. comprehend and write upper-intermediate level Japanese texts on a range of topics independently and with increasing critical engagement with appropriate dictionaries and technologies;
2. demonstrate upper-intermediate level proficiency in speaking and listening comprehension including using appropriate speech styles and culturally relevant communication strategies in casual conversations and formal presentations about a variety of topics related to Japanese culture and society in global contexts;
3. recognise and effectively use approximately 620 kanji characters (150 new characters);
4. apply appropriate research skills in individual and collective investigations of Japanese culture and society using available technologies and appropriate English and Japanese materials.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
