Overview

In this unit you will engage with storytelling traditions from a range of cultural backgrounds and critically examine the relationship between these traditions and theatrical practice. This includes entering into deeper relationships with various cultural contexts including First Nations, Classical and Medieval European contexts, as well as East and South East Asian performance forms. You will discern between practices founded in ritual / religion and those based in the profane, while developing a practical understanding of the relationship between storyteller and performer. Through practice-based activities, you will actively explore this relationship as a way of developing a greater understanding of the evolution and history of theatrical practice. This will include the creation and presentation of works based on the practices and traditions encountered in the unit, and advancing your learning in a practical way by applying it within contemporary cultural contexts.
