The unit allows you to build on the critical, analytical and linguistic skills acquired throughout the European Languages major by developing a research or translation project tailored to their disciplinary and linguistic interests.

Learning outcomes
- identify and describe key methodological aspects of research and practice in one of the following areas: cultural and literary studies; translation studies; applied linguistics; sociology & political science; philosophy; film & media studies; History & Art history, etc
- identify and evaluate the key resources relevant to the topic through the completion of a project research proposal, a literature review and a research diary
- critically analyse sources and/or data using relevant theoretical and methodological frameworks
- produce either a research essay; an annotated translation; or a podcast/vodcast episode plus exegesis
- apply the proficient or advanced knowledge of one of the following languages to research or translation: French, German, Italian, Spanish.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
