Overview

This unit is designed to strengthen your understanding of French and Francophone cultures globally while fostering the development of your French language competencies at a B1-B2 level. In the language component of this unit, you will develop your language skills through the study of French grammar and translation and your capacity to express sophisticated ideas both in spoken and written French. In the cultural component of this unit, you will work with authentic documents and sources to develop competencies in the analysis of real-life issues currently affecting the French-speaking world.

Learning outcomes

  1. communicate effectively and appropriately in both spoken and written French using grammatical concepts and vocabulary at a level equivalent to B1-B2 of the European Framework;
  2. apply critical knowledge and a sophisticated understanding of modern and contemporary French and Francophone societies and of the issues that affect them;
  3. analyse, evaluate and synthesise cultural texts and narrative constructs through a range of written, audio and video documents in a methodical and research-oriented manner.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
