ATS3360 · International relations in the Asian century
2027 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 3School of Social Sciences
Overview
The Asian Century refers to the growing centrality of Asia in International Relations. As the world economy reorients from the North to the East, the global centre of gravity is shifting to Asia, creating not just economic but political consequences. As China’s power rises, Asia is becoming the focal point of geopolitical competition between the US and China, but the region is also home to several rising and middle powers, which seek to navigate the opportunities and challenges that an Asian Century poses. In this unit, you will critically examine the concept of the Asian Century, and its geopolitical, economic and diplomatic dimensions. You will take part in an international study tour, spending time in Monash’s campuses in Asia, examining how the Asian Century is understood and experienced from the perspectives of the different countries involved, and how this shapes their engagement with the region. You will also learn how these states (especially Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia) and regional actors such as ASEAN seek to govern this regional order and its opportunities and challenges. Taught in intensive mode, this unit will involve interactive in-class activities, field visits with key stakeholders and organisations, and reflective analysis of the meanings and implications of the Asian Century, equipping you with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and contribute to a world in which Asia plays an increasingly central role.
